Never used a lathe, have a couple of questions

For pen turning you don’t need a chuck and most pens are turned with a mandrel that fits in the headstock e.g. an MT2 fitting. For bigger workpieces you don’t “need” a chuck, but you may find one “useful” later on, when some methods which avoid the need for a chuck become tiresome, when you’ve...

    Aldi bandsaw fence woes..

In the description it seems to be that the test workpiece (as photographed) has a flat edge (at the top of the photograph) placed against the fence, but the cuts relative to this edge are not straight e.g. bowed. If the bottom of the wood (as photographed) isn't straight and also isn't being...

    Broadband internet provider recomendation provider.

I also have a domain address, but don't run a POP3 mail system. Gmail also provides a means to receive mail using your domain email address using the gmail mail client.

    Broadband internet provider recomendation provider.

I have never seen the "attraction" for having a internet provider email address. Far easier to signup with someone else e.g. I have a gmail address. Can buy internet from anyone in the future without needing to tell anyone.

    Breadmaking

I am originally from the Black Country (At least 24 hours - and probably longer) and the crust (for me) is a crucial part of "our" loaf. It makes the whole loaf last longer (Time's hard and money is short) and the "ends" are as important as any of the "sides". For our daily crust... When you...

Adapting a workshop/garage when considering the neighbours

I have two neighbours nearby and live in the countryside. One thinks it's "cool" to make stuff and is far enough away that the noise isn't a problem. The other is a "little concerned" about the noise I make. We agreed that I would keep the noise down by closing the door. He uses his equipment...

    Breadmaking

When I first started I tried the smaller loaves (as bread making addiction goes) and then "gravitated" to the bigger ones. Of course, as the size increases it's only the height that increases. Consumption stabilised (my families needs) too. My only interest in making the bigger loaf was to...

    Breadmaking

Panasonic has two recipes for French with menu #9. The French recipe takes 6 hours (a white loaf is normally 3 hours) and produces a (very good) crusty white bread that has open structure (big bubbles) which they describe as "crispy crust and texture". The finished product is very good but...

    Breadmaking

There are some e.g. Sage by Heston [Blumenthal] - look on Amazon. The spec says: "Thoroughly mixes ingredients, then collapses to maximise loaf slices and make the loaf easy to remove from the pan". One 5 star reviewer said: "I would still recommend it but the 'clever' device to flatten the...

    Breadmaking

Some of the higher end breadmakers let you either interrupt the bake to remove the paddle (this leaves a hole - but not a paddle mark) or retracts the paddle into the base. If you use a breadmaker to make dough - you can bake it in any shape you want separately and there's no hole (but also no...

    Chuck advice

From TO4M - 1" x 8tpi to T38 - M33 x 3.5mm 8) If it's Axminster 900 with SK100 to new Axminster with M33 thread (and either an exert or new chuck required). I apologise (in advance) for wanting to spend your money Tim, but... if you sell the SK100 and advertise it on the forum and get back...

    Belt tension for pillar drill

I have a pillar drill with an intermediate pulley wheel, so the belts may be shorter than for one without. The mechanism slides back over two circular bars and can be “locked off” and the belt is a V belt that’s flat on four sides. Seems “crude” but it’s just fine. I have it tensioned with both...

    Chuck advice

There is no easy solution. An insert is very different to an exert. With the insert there is only a small increase in weight and shift away from the headstock bearings - so any unbalanced workpiece will behave the same. With the exert there is a need to adapt a smaller thread to a bigger thread...

    Shallow hanging shelves

Paint finish on MDF is easy to get right and if a plywood edge is exposed there can be unpleasant voids to cover up on the cheap stuff.

    Shallow hanging shelves

It's a well executed project and the story leading up to it's construction provides "providence" (doubles it's worth no doubt too). Was it necessary for the shelves to be pinned to the back to support the weight of filled jars? I saw the plywood back and immediately thought that it was "out of...

    Dust collector

I should apologise - I shouldn't encourage you to spend your money! I watched a youtube video for a bandsaw - and ended up buying the same BS. The same Rutlands Dust extractor was purchased and (will be) connected to the BS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68Dpt-VFiQU NB It's for you to make...

    Dust collector

The Rutlands dust collector does look to be an exact clone of the Record Power DX1000 - which I have. One way to be sure is to download manuals for both and compare the parts list. Same diagram almost certainly means from the same factory. Interesting Record Power have a 2nd machine with the...

    Anyone got a Breadmaker

I would be interested in the recipe for German black bread - if you make it in a bread machine, knowing which recipe setting to use would also be helpful e.g.it's like #5 wholewheat, but with xyz in the recipe (for me - for it to "work" it has to be foolproof). I noticed that Panasonic have a...

    Anyone got a Breadmaker

I have the Panasonic SD-2511W Multi-Function Bread Maker. There are three very similar versions of the white unit and it's worth checking out the differences. There is also black and stainless steel versions. (homer) This model is the first one to mention the ambient temperature sensor - but...
