Axminster Trade lathes Middle or High versions

Sorry - I have a tendency to waffle on. It's a hobby, so I try to keep costs under control. Two projects I would really like to attempt are turned legs (28”- 30”) for dining room tables and wooden (wool) spinning wheels (15”-24”). I should have said this upfront. Neither lathe can manage the...

Axminster Trade lathes Middle or High versions

I'm considering an AT2030VS, and using the extension (as an outrigger) for workpieces that are up to 24" diameter, occasionally. AT1624VS and extension is too long for me.

    Axminster SK114 variant question

On the website it says "One important lesson for woodturners to learn is not to use the chuck key for removing the chuck from the headstock". The chuck removal spanner doesn’t fit the SK114, so one option is to use a Boa wrench. I've asked if it also OK to use the chuck key with SK114.

Gouge sharpening jigs for basic grinders

I have the "gouge holder, 2 guide rails & a flat platform" equivalent which I bought from Andrew Hall - when he was at a club demo night. He also provided a tutorial video on how to use it for all types of tool. There were however no written instructions. The product is not really any different...

    Axminster SK114 variant question

Thread is quite old - but to bring it up to date: For variants for M33 x 3.5 spindles, there are currently at least three chucks available: 1. SK100 T38 chuck has an additional collar for sanding in reverse 2. SK114 T38 chuck has no additional collar for sanding in reverse 3. SK114 T38R chuck...

    Outrigger for AT1628VS lathe

Apologies. I should have looked at this thread before starting a new one and I’m keen to use your knowledge gained so far. I would be tempted to buy thicker/deeper angle iron, welded into a rectangle for strength. Previously, I wanted to make an outrigger however I’m now thinking a bed...

Outboard turning of a bigger bowl

I agree about plywood. I was going to use oak/cherry for top, softwood for verticals and plywood only to spread weight for a square on floor. I have everything already.

Outboard turning of a bigger bowl

I'm looking at trying outboard turning e.g. putting the headstock in the middle of the lathe bed facing forwards and using a freestanding tool rest to turn (bigger than the normal swing) bowls. I was going to make one from 2x4 timber (12" wide frame and required height) and a 3/4" plywood foot...
