Pen Turning attachment advice wanted please

I have just bought a basic kit that only focusses on turning the blanks - it just says assemble the parts without saying how the "press" part is done. What is an easy to use method that doesn't require a pen press?

    Chuck for small lathe

I would second the Axminster SK100 and it's a perfect match for the Hobby/Craft lathes. The range of Axminster jaws is very wide. As stated the SK100 fits both the 100mm and 80mm accessory jaws. The SK114 (which I also have) works with the 100mm accessory jaws as well as 114mm accessories too...

    Record Coronet Herald

I have an SK100 in need of an M33 thread too. Perhaps they would do it, if you collected together a few more chuck owners aka "chuckers", for an order of 10+ conversions e.g. making it worth their while?

    Hardwood suppliers near Salisbury

Thanks. I'm interested in their behind the scenes tour on 18th so an even better opportunity to buy some blanks/spindles at sales prices. Visiting Yandles on 12th to try out pen turning - so I can look at their 2 x 2 spindles etc. at the same time. To arrange a trip to Paul at Goulden...

    Record Coronet Herald

Try downloading the Coronet manual from Record Power’s website: Coronet Herald, Downloads and looking at the headstock drawings. The pulley belt can be changed without knocking out the bearings. That’s not so good if you want good bearing support. Mark Baker (I have his woodturning book/DVD)...

    Record Coronet Herald

Hi Waka, buying a £10 "exert" may be cheap to buy now, but if you buy the new lathe and later decide that you really don't like the exert, then replacing all 6 chucks will not feel quite so "cheap". The total purchases will have cost £1,820 e.g. £10 + £1,000 + 6 x £135 (later) and you will loose...

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

"Yew" done good! I liked the beech bowl (favourite wood at the moment) and the finish of the base too.

    Hardwood suppliers near Salisbury

I'm looking for hardwood suppliers near Salisbury (or Southampton) for woodturning e.g. closer than Yandles. I can cut bowl blanks from boards and rip wide stock into smaller sizes. In particular I'm having trouble finding suppliers of distinct light (Sycamore/Maple) or dark species (Purple...

    Outboard turning support

Better configuration. Is there any vibration or whip in vertical/side-to-side direction in use vs "normal" setup and a test workpiece?

hilka 900 variable speed not working

Has the Hilka 900 got a Reeves drive similar to the one used on Axminster AWVSL 1000/AC370WL, but with a swivelling headstock that's immovable? Axminster had a similar one called the AWVSL 900. It's a generic version of a Chinese lathe that uses die-cast aluminium pulley wheels. Axminster sell...

Balancing wheels of a budget grinder/ buying a balanced one

You could try loosening a new wheel and rotating it by 90/180/270 and afterwards checking it again (might get lucky). An old wheel has it's eccentricity ironed out when it's diamond dressed (cleaned).

    Outboard turning support

At the moment the bed extension is a long/complex L shape that could be better braced (more than just supported). If the lathe isn't bolted to the floor, try adding a temporary support e.g. 2 x 4 (clamped top/bottom) between the lathe leg T base and the underneath of the bed extension...

Storing timber for turning in a log store outside.

This is something that I've seen/wanted, I was thinking about: Is there DPC to prevent problems with damp? Is there (mastic) seal/flashing between wall and roof? Is back/stored material away from brickwork? Are slats open but overlapping (like tiles on battens). Is it made of treated timber and...

    Outrigger for AT1628VS lathe

I wouldn't say that you have bodged things. You have advanced the "science" of outriggers quite a long way!

    Outrigger for AT1628VS lathe

Robbo, good to see that you noticed the difference in heights! I measured the height from the top of the lathe bed to the centre of the highest pair of tapped holes - it's 1.5" on RH end and 3.5" on the LH end and hence the 2" drop e.g. 4" extra swing using the bed extension on LH end. The end...

    Outrigger for AT1628VS lathe

Using the outrigger at the end of the bed is pretty (very) nifty and the lathe bed seems more robust than the cast legs for mounting e.g. less likely to be shocked/cracked. You only use two holes. So you can find two holes that are at the same height, and also at each end? What I meant, by the...

    new lathe time this year

Robbo is correct, that there are mounting holes at each end of the AT1628 lathe bed, however they are NOT the same at each end because the LH end (on the current version) has them about 2" lower. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage. This means that you cannot expect to put an extension...

    Outrigger for AT1628VS lathe

Robbo, I gave this “problem” some more thought. Ideally, I also wanted to use an outrigger, but also make full use the extension post and extension bed. I’m considering: A) Vertical bracket attached on to the leg mount points (2/4 bolts) B) Vertical bracket attached on to the lathe bed mounts...

    Outrigger for AT1628VS lathe

Robbo, the mount points on the LH side of the lathe bed are 2” lower than on the RH end. Mounting the extension bed on LH end (and going around the corner for an outrigger) increases the swing by 4”, but it doesn’t also reach the full potential.

    Outrigger for AT1628VS lathe

Robbo, do you have the AT1614VS extension bed, because I recognise the 9" extension post that's also supplied? Why not use both when making a front outrigger? How realistic would it be, to obtain a short length of extra heavy duty "industrial sized" angle iron to use the mounting holes on the...
