    Gluing oily woods

Acetone is very easy to obtain. Look up your nearest glass fibre and resin supplier, boatbuilders, canoe makers etc. Strand Glass used to be national suppliers. Sold in 5 litre cans as brush cleaner for polyester resin and is cheap! Aldel

    Bench vise

Pete, I currently use one of Axminsters "automatic" vices, and whilst solidly built and with a very deep capacity, I can honestly say that I would never buy another one. Turning the handle anti clockwise releases the grip but does not open the jaws. You have to manually pull the jaws open...

    How many candles are burning?

The big 60 is rushing up to meet me. Ill health forced early retirement at 52 and has been a constant battle ever since. Woodwork has been a hobby since primary school and in fact have always had an interest in all things DIY, metalwork, any type of building work etc. Anything, plumbing, alarms...

Sorry Tony You can MIG weld alloy and I have successfully done it a number of times. All you require is a Mig welder alloy Mig wire and a small cylinder of Argon gas plus very clean work. Also weld stainless with the correct wire and Argon I also find gasless MIG on steel easy. Requires a...

    Belt and Disk Sanding Station

Gill, I have that very model of sander and had it for a few years now and couldn't be without it. Never given a stick of trouble. Sometimes it wont start unless you give a 'flick' to get going but it has always been like that. Like all sanding stations it is a bit dusty. Get yourself some extra...

    Am I Mad?

Ah Gill, You are observant! I was given that plane as payment for two days worth of hard computer fixing by a (friend?). You really do need to own one just to demonstate it as probably the World's worst designed tool ever made! Aldel

    Am I Mad?

I have so much in my workshop that when I want a particular tool that I haven't used for some time that I can't remember where I put it. (Old age?) So I have been on a bit of a tidy up. Now I am a sucker for rescuing unloved planes and once they become part of the family they are all friends and...

I have discovered that retirement for some reason means not enough hours in the day to do what I did when I was working. Building and repairing computers and networks, gardening, watercolour painting, motorcycling (Honda VFR 800), local history and post card collecting, goldfish, finding and...
