    Help buying quality wood.

Linus beat me to it, I’ve been lucky when I’ve visited Southampton Wood Recycling, but, it can be a bit hit and miss with stock also. You could try East Bros saw mill in West Dean, not sure if they still ok with smaller quantities, use to be though. They do hardwoods, good larch etc.

    A Marples Mystery ….

Anyone offer an opinion on this Marples cutting gauge. It’s got twin cutters, which I’ve not seen before, nor can I find any reference to a type with twin cutters online. 10” stem. Even https://williammarplesandsons.com which has a very comprehensive section on marking gauges shows nothing...

    BBC Scaremongering again

Bought me some of those old fangled strings coated in thick wax last week. Not due to anything the media put out, rather, because once I heard the statement from the government energy minister that there’d be no energy shortages this winter, I thought, we could be off again on another...

    First go at turning!

Phil’s response is spot on, and even better, you’ll have to turn another one, this woodturning lark is so addictive ;)

    Is this an eBay scam?

So, I spoke to an eBay rep yesterday after which I decided to refund the buyer, through Ebay. The eBay rep confirmed that the purchase was made using a credit card through EBay’s payment portal. What I had missed, was that I have been so used to PayPal payments in the past, that since...

    Is this an eBay scam?

Thanks all :) I’m definitely not an easy mark, however, Ebay a scams do evolve, and this, if it is a scammer, is a new tactic to me. I don’t want someone to be out of pocket if it’s genuine, but at the same time, don’t want to initiate contact if it’s a £#@&?6 trying it on. So shall wait and see.

    Is this an eBay scam?

An item sold on eBay beginning of sept has been returned, without any communication previously, with a hand written note from the buyer asking to be refunded onto a Visa card, Visa card number written onto the note. Original purchase was via PayPal, no explanation as to why item returned, it is...

    Turning chisels

Agree with the Axminster, I started with these, and they were good to learn with, easy to sharpen, they retain an edge well and several years on, I still use them amongst my many others.

    Shop Vac

Hi Al, I’ve just recently bought the Trend T32L M class vac for similar reasons, to hook up to machine tools such as sander etc, pleased with its performance so far. M Class rated for the really fine dust. I thought capacity could be greater before I purchased but in practice it’s not been an...

    Using Old Wooden Planes

Thanks everyone for your guidance and experience, all very useful and appreciated. If I get to 1/10 of your standard Adam, I’ll be happy. Very useful to see the process of different cuts to get to the finished profile. Checking the point regarding the wedges are providing a very good secure...

    Using Old Wooden Planes

I guess like many, I’ve a fair few old wooden planes, the look of them appeals, and when you pick up a jointer, you know from its weight and bulk it’ means business. So, just recently, I’ve started attempting to use a few, in particular a 17” and a couple of beading planes with limited &...

    Who has taken them!

BBC were certainly more balanced than Jeremy Vine show on Channel 5, so called journalism at its worst.

How are you supposed to remove these screws?

Pgrbff, are the saw nuts threaded or push fit types ? , some old saw nuts that have slots, were push fit types, not designed to be tightened with a slot driver. If push fit, then to tighten may not be permanent, try tapping then down. The shallow slot suggests push fit. If they are threaded, to...

    A mystery engineering tool ?

Another mystery tool, from my fathers tools this time, part of an Inclinometer maybe. The bar slides, can pivot along the axis and be fixed by tightening the large wheel. The small wheel increases the incline of the bar by small amount - not a lot of clearance.

    Candle holders

Very nice Adam. Burning Olive wood is such a waste, good to see them turned (swidt) into something attractive. I use to turn a lot of candle holders when I first had a lathe, not done any for a while, but seeing these, think I’ll see what suitable wood I have, no Olive unfortunately.
