Ever wished you said ‘thanks, that’s kind, but no - freebie lathe chuck

A well intentioned friend of a friend, knowing I have a lathe, asked if I’d I could make use of a chuck, as he had one in his garage and he was going to dispose of it at the local tip. So, off we went, after all, woodturners can always do with another chuck right? The gentleman concerned was a...

    Old GWR Tool

Not sure it’s original purpose, a scraper of sorts, the blade fairly heavy gauge at 2.5 mm, but sharing as it’s a nice example with the copper fastenings, I’ve a couple of tools stamped GWR and they also have a quality look and feel.

record power rpbs12 bandsaw parts needed

I used to have same bandsaw, I upgraded the blade guide assembly, including upper and lower guides all in around £70.00. Raised max cut height by approx 1” also. Bought from https://www.bedfordsaw.co.uk/ These guys were very helpful, and I’ve used them s again a few times. They do a few...

Nostalgia - Jack Hargreaves - Out of Town, Old Country

With some spare time last week, did something I rarely do….searching aimless on YouTube rather than view my favourite channels. Up popped a Jack Hargreaves programme from the late 70s early 80’s and I felt instantly transported back to being a lad, loved his tv programmes, his fishing...

    Mystery Elliott Brothers Thingamabob

Anyone know what this was used for? Graces Guide provides info on Elliot Brothers being an early instrumentation maker eventually moving into electrical instruments. So, possibly an aid to calibration ? From a carpentry tool chest, wonder why would a carpenter squirrel it away wrapped in waxed...

    Norris plane - how much!!!

I thought majority of the items are very high, these prices the seller not aiming for users. If your in no hurry to sell, time is a friend, as likely eventually a collector happens along with very deep pockets.

    Coronet wood lathe

I purchased a record SC4 Chuck for my coronet herald, very pleased with it, secure holding and very easy to use. Included is a thread insert relevant to your spindle size, you’ll need to select this when you order/select in a store. (changing the insert allows the chuck to be used on lathes...

    Turning green

If your going to have several pieces, I’d be tempted to rough turn half to final shape, the other half just turn to cylinder.

    Mystery Brass Tool

Ah, Pete, that’s a damn good call, and I can visualise it, although it would only reach 2-3”. It was in the draw of a carpentry tool chest, badly tarnished, and I ignored it for ages over the more interesting items, but initially I thought some sort of depth gauge, but clearly it’s for a...

    Mystery Brass Tool

Schoolboy error ref’ Stanley 5 1/2 Type 11 Cutter Size

Thanks Vann, that’s probably where my Record cutter came from. I wonder if the size change from 2.1/4” on the 5 1/5 to match the 2.3/8” of the 4 1/2 was due to a need to reduce costs after the war.

Schoolboy error ref’ Stanley 5 1/2 Type 11 Cutter Size

Thanks Ian, you’ve described exactly what happened in how I realised the cutter dimensions were not as I expected, then I also referred to Patrick’s site, and doh! Still, it’s something now that I won’t forget, just in case I see another early 5 1/2, but thats unlikely I think. What do you mean...

Schoolboy error ref’ Stanley 5 1/2 Type 11 Cutter Size

Thanks Ian, I wasn’t aware of this place, good job I m not closer to it or it would probably keep me away from tasks I should be getting on with. The Stalbridge toolshop is not to far from family, often end up in there, it’s like sweet shop for big kids.

Schoolboy error ref’ Stanley 5 1/2 Type 11 Cutter Size

Thanks Jacob. Been wondering what benefit Stanley thought the narrower cutter was, given that the 4 1/2 was available earlier with wider cutter. Is reasonable to assume the change to 2 3/8” was a later cost saving though.

Schoolboy error ref’ Stanley 5 1/2 Type 11 Cutter Size

Thanks Adam, hopefully he’ll read the post and may have something to add. I’ve had this for a while, it’s a little bashed up already, really could do with replacement handles, rosewood I suspect, but I hung onto it as I’d not seen an early 5 1/2 before, but I possibly should move it on.
