Going To Be In This Months The Woodworker Magazine

you can avoid this by having a quick mufti at copy in WH Smiths! Giraffes are remarkable creatures - How do you avoid continuously fainting because your neck is so long that every time you look up to eat a leaf all the blood drains from your head and your brain goes wrong? Grow a second mini...

    Sacrilege or Sense?

more nonsense than normal on this thread, although I do agree with the bit about Yorkshire Tea. No matter your stance on Brexit I hope we can all at least take some consolation from the fact the tea growers on the banks of the River Don will at long last be protected from the meddling of the...

    Tannin/Iron Staining, Oak Galls

I wondered about whether it affected glue too, although I assumed not just because it is a traditional solution. It is extraordinary how deep black the stain is but it actually seems to penetrate very little (you can plane it one or two light passes). So you'd think something from the mixture...

Going To Be In This Months The Woodworker Magazine

looks great - I should probably buy the magazine to find out, but is it covered in material or is that paint/wood-stain (however you did it, it is very effective!).

    The Best Allen Keys?

Having been forced into the world of mechanic'ing due to my unreliable 3 wheeled van, I finally got fed up with routing around my tool box for the right allen key and order a new set. Has the fact that my new ones are colour coded revealed to all and sundry that I am a hapless amateur, or is...

    Sloe time of year.

another way to spot Sloes/Blackthorn (for next year), at least down my neck of the woods (Herts), is it flowers very early. The blossom is similar to hawthorn but often comes out 4 or 5 weeks beforehand in early April (the blossom come before the leaves). I am not sure why, but wherever...

    Sacrilege or Sense?

normally I would avoid commenting on a sharpening thread, but this comment is utter nonsense. Hobnobs are over rated too. Anyone who can't make do with a (dark) chocolate digestive has taken leave of their senses.

"Stay Set" plane: can someone explain?

Me too, you'd think they would be significantly more costly to make - I wonder if they only kept the price equal in the early days to promote them?

    Sloe time of year.

another vote for rhubarb - one of the best cocktails I ever had was made with gin and rhubarb syrup. My kids also liked to take a bag of sugar up to the allotment, dip in a broken stick of raw rhubarb and the suck the ends. It is delicious but all your teeth fall out shortly afterwards...

    Sloe time of year.

ah I see BM - I am not very scientific: half a bottle of sloes, about half as much again sugar and then top up with gin. tbh it just tastes like strange ribena to me so I have never experimented!

"Stay Set" plane: can someone explain?

there is a an undated Record catalogue (mid 1930s?) that shows the range of SS planes was the same price as the standard ones, at least at that point. Since the SS versions were available from the early 1930s I can't think of any explanation for the relatively small numbers that survive...

    Sloe time of year.

tradition has it you are supposed to pop each berry with a pin. I confess I have never bothered - I just put mine in a bag in the freezer which breaks the skins. I did not know there was anything to the recipe other than sugar, sloes and gin - happy to be corrected!

"Stay Set" plane: can someone explain?

I think the improved feeling is because a large part of the cutter is in close contact with the fixed part and the removable part bridges the space between the end of the fixed part and the tip of the cutter. I had not realised the SS cap irons were shorter - perhaps it was done so the lever...

    From push bike to ebike

have you got a bigger version of this picture finney (or a link?)? it is too small for my blurry eyes to make out the important bit!

"Stay Set" plane: can someone explain?

I had a closer look at my (only) SS tonight and it turns out that the black mark showing at the front side of the grove on the deflector is actually a little ridge of crud . Per jacob's earlier comment, I wonder if this is enough to act like a little fulcrum on which the deflector can pivot up...

"Stay Set" plane: can someone explain?

I have undercut the front end, but must admit I have never looked closely at the fit of the other parts. I'll take a look at the weekend

"Stay Set" plane: can someone explain?

I agree with that, despite a fair amount of fettling: ...I still occasionally get shavings caught in the SS cap iron (particularly when set close) but not so with the ordinary cap iron. I suppose that little bit of spring in the older design really helps to minimise the gap at the critical...

"Stay Set" plane: can someone explain?

Record made several great claims about the stay set design: IMO the best one is 'adds greatly to the rigidity of the plane’ ... which it actually does. The effect is a bit odd, but the plane somehow feels more solid when used with a SS cap iron compared with the standard fare*. I am not...

    Workshop Vegetables

on blight, I agree with Tony about avoiding burning them (they will burn if left to dry out a bit and mixed with other dry material but your neighbours will not be happy as they emit massive clouds of black smoke!). The theory is that the blight can overwinter if you compost the foliage but...

    From push bike to ebike

aren't these new fangled conversion kits a bit over complicated? There must be a gap in the market for an old-skool version that simply attaches to your front fork and drives the front wheel with a rubber roller? Travis 1.5HP (~1950) - thousands sold!
