    Vice install on new bench

my guess is that if we had a straw poll on this forum the most popular way to install the vice would be as per the pic in the thread Andy linked (reproduced below). As Andy says this is also the correct way :) one thing to note about the diagram is the fixings used to attach the jaw linings...

Spring for Record 52 1/2 Quick Release

hello Anders and welcome! I think your vice is an early version where Record used a spring held against the bottom of the casting to push against the underside of the half nut. This ensures it is held firmly against the screw until the lever is pressed (later models used a 'watch spring'...

    Spitfires are so distracting!

I grew up in Shropshire and the planes on the way to Cosford air show used to fly over our school - unforgettable!

    Millers Falls jointed lever cap

[consults aforementioned excellent review.... ] the metal parts of the MF #4 I tested were 6% lighter than the Record and the casting 11% thiner. I was quite rightly pulled up on my comment that the Record was thicker and therefore better, since many people do indeed prefer a lighter plane...

    Millers Falls jointed lever cap

They do come up , I've got one and indeed I did an (excellent, natch) review of it on this very forum. I always use my MF #4 in preference to my perfectly good Record ( thanks to the marvellous 2 part lever cap!). Treat yourself just4fun!

    Millers Falls jointed lever cap

PS I once wrote to ask Rob Lee of Lee Valley fame if he would ever consider reintroducing the idea (Veritas were one of the few people to ever copy it, in their long forgotten Paragon range). Sadly he has no plans - partly because there is no standard for the set-back distance for the screw...

    Millers Falls jointed lever cap

the invention is part of a long history - going right back to Leonard Bailey - of attempts to find ways to hold the cutters in metal planes more securely to the frog. The idea is to reduce the chance of the cutter vibrating and flexing - not an essential improvement by any means, but one...

    Millers Falls jointed lever cap

It is a work of genius, has a similar effect as the record stay-set (makes the plane feel more solid) without creating any more faff setting up the cap iron.

Why modern chisels are "softer" than some older ones.

in t'olden days a chisel was deemed exactly the tool for this type of job and were designated their own name: 'ripping chisels' (the name for an old chisel used for rough work or as a wedge for separating planks of wood that have been nailed together). moxon:

    A bodgers workbench

my mistake, looking again at the 1963 catalogue it is only the standard QR vice that has the cover. The 'D' model (the one with the dog in the front jaw) does not. I have never really looked into what happened to the design after the merger with Ridgeway and subsequent acquisition by Irwin...

    A bodgers workbench

so far as I know, the so called 'screw and nut cover' was standard issue on all the QR vices made after the range was relaunched in the 60s but only available as an option before then.

Has anyone recently applied for a new Passport?

the passport office, like many of the larger government departments, have been making a concerted effort to introduce modern digital services that put the end users first. The things they are coming up with are really impressive and deceptively simple (huge amounts of research are needed...

Has anyone recently applied for a new Passport?

I shouldn't think it is anything to worry about - text messages can be delayed or lost for reasons outside of the control of the sender, and of course it will take them time to process the forms once they are received. You can always call them if you are worried...

    Rubber 4 roofing

did mine with EPDM from rubber 4 roofing also - as said above the company is helpful and they are also did a very reasonably price and delivered when promised. It is very easy to fit and there are video instructions on the web.

So, do most of you use sketch up for your designs?

the other bonus of having a physical drawing is it encourages other people to engage with it in a way that it is not nearly as natural or convenient when on a PC. Not strictly design related, but when modern technology companies started to reject computer based planning and drawing tools in...

    Underground wasp nest

my neighbour's top tip is to squirt brake cleaner in the hole. Never tried it mind you.

    The Best Allen Keys?

that's good to hear. I hadn't even noticed there was no 7mm, although if the only time they are ever needed is for brake callipers then I should be alright (my van has drum brakes!).
