Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

good news plane fans! Millers Falls solved plane chatter in 1929 when they introduced their new planes with a fancy two part lever cap. The mind boggles! https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=WygDAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA103&dq=millers%20falls%20plane%20april%201929&pg=PA103#v=onepage&q&f=false I have...

North Bros "Yankee" Bench Drill - how it works

I realise that the audience for in-depth info on old drills made by an extinct US manufacturer is probably quite small, but in the spirit of sharing for future posterity and the enjoyment of tool nerds, here is what I found out about North Bros’ advertising for the 1003/1005. It shows the art...

    Refinishing Bailey plane handles

I generally scrape off the original finish if it is flaking off, and in these cases I just use wax to finish (beeswax/linseed oil -easy to make at home!) which tends to slightly darken the wood. One thing I learned was to be careful with linseed oil - I used it o clean up a rosewood handle...

North bros 1003 bench drill - dismantling?

yes it was satisfying to get it working, particularly after thinking it was a goner for a while. For those that like this kind of thing I have done some painstaking research and reported it here: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/north-bros-yankee-bench-drill-how-it-works-t103209.html...

North Bros "Yankee" Bench Drill - how it works

As recorded in here: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/north-bros-1003-bench-drill-dismantling-t102897.html ... I've been trying to renovate a slightly battered North Bros “Yankee” drill (model 1003) - it really is a brilliant piece of design and, despite suffering some serious neglect in the...

North bros 1003 bench drill - dismantling?

success! the new ball bearing and housing are shown assembled below - I made a small plastic washer to take up the slack and the drill now works. It does occasionally stick momentarily when raising the drill upwards - I think this is due to some wear on the spigot and the part that mounts he...

North bros 1003 bench drill - dismantling?

fair play to Simply Bearings Ltd, I placed my order at 4pm on Friday and it arrived this morning at 10am. I also found a replacement spring and screw. So tune in tomorrow for the thrilling denouement!

North bros 1003 bench drill - dismantling?

I decided to cut the housing off and then to try and find a replacement bearing. Looking at the result I think this was the right decision, - the top of the housing appears to have been forced down over the top of the ball bearings, all of which were very corroded. The C-washer shows signs...

    I love traditional wooden planes

Very informative Giuliano - thanks very much for sharing the video. Out of curiosity, how long does it take you to make a bench plane?

North bros 1003 bench drill - dismantling?

so... the housing is definitely free of the c-washer, although it does seem like the piece on which the ball bearings sit is somehow fused with the housing. it was a good suggestion to take photos - on closer inspection of the zoomed in picture I noticed that: a) the groove for the c-washer...

North bros 1003 bench drill - dismantling?

Thanks - I am indeed still stuck and it is very kind of you to take those extra pictures. It is good to know that the housing is supposed to separate easily from the C-washer, since it confirms that somehow mine has been damaged (although the housing spins reasonably freely and independently...

North bros 1003 bench drill - dismantling?

Thanks Rhyolith, that makes perfect sense - I have reassembled the drill and now notice there is a gap between the base of the main thread and the housing holding the ball bearings. The only explanation I can think of is that the housing and c-washer have somehow been knocked down the spindle...

    Can anyone identify this brace?

I have a 7 in Chapman brace that looks very similar, including those distinctive rings on the handle and head. It does not mention the registered design model, but "manufactured by J A Chapman Sheffield - England" is marked on the chuck, and "steel 7in" on the frame. I did do a bit of research...

    Brace brand and age question.

that's a good link Pedder - here is an example on ebay Germany with the same chuck which seems to suggest the one from the OP is from the same maker...

North bros 1003 bench drill - dismantling?

thanks Rhyolith for the clarification - having cleaned some of the grunge from the spindle I can see the spring loaded ball bearing you were describing. I included a section of your dismantled drill picture to show the bit i am trying to remove - any suggestion from you, Claus or others would be...

    Record Imp Vice

adventures in tube bending apologies, I have the day off from work and seem to have rather too much time on my hands. The vertical tube bender arrangement does indeed mean the jaws interfere with the tube. However, it is possible to put a bend at the end of a tube if you so wish, as I have...

me too! what a relief. although I am not a serious tube bender, I think it is fair to say it is in a better position on the paramo.

    Brace brand and age question.

the patent is for the chuck and was originally filed in germany by Alb. Urbahn & Comp., Remscheid- Güldenwerth https://worldwide.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?CC=GB&NR=390970A&KC=A&FT=D&ND=3&date=19330420&DB=&locale=en_EP not sure that helps with the manufacturer, although I guess it...
