    Vice types and selection.

my woodworking "career" only spans 5 years but I have owned two vices - a Veritas face vice (wooden handle) and a Record 52 1/2. my opinion: there is no difference in comfort, although I find the QR is useful (not everyone agrees). All vices rack -the degree is a matter of size of the...

Anyone built a sauna /wet room?

Mr.Mika, I am curious about whether in Finland it is common for people to build their own saunas, or do people generally pay a commercial company to install a standard kit? I am asking because my wife is threatening to turn one half of our (long) garage into a gymnasium and - inspired by...

    Two Foot, Four Fold

thanks to Andy for the timely reminder that the tool catalogue library is constantly updated, although it has caused me to spend the last 10 minutes reading a catalogue about "how to select and use wrenches"! https://archive.org/details/williamshow ... sewrenches notable for containing several...

Woodwork hand tool demo. chisel question

why not have a few ready sharpened chisels on hand and let them compare a few basic cutting/chopping with both an unsharpened and sharpened one? Might help keep the interest up on the sharpening demo? I wish someone had been around to show me how to sharpen when I was starting! Good luck!

    Bridge City Hand Planes

hard to watch without wincing, but oddly entertaining! It is a pity he could not have tested more vintage vices. I suppose the newer vices - at least the high-end ones - must benefit from better quality machining and materials, but I wonder how much difference it makes?

    Elm trees

funnily enough the only largish elm I knew off at the last place I lived was in an overgrown hedgerow outside the front of my old house (in fact it is possibly the only one I have ever knowingly seen as an adult - I was born in 1970 so by the time I grew up nearly all the mature ones were...

    Prepping before painting

I have not repainted a bench plane but did decide to do a "proper" restoration on this Miller Falls drill. I think the prep will depend on what you use for the final coat. I painted mine with enamel paint - used for painting small toys and the like - and used Mipa Rapid Filler as an...

What bits for a hand brace?

definitely worth experimenting with a few - as mentioned above if the screw at the tip is badly damaged they do not pull into the wood. Sharpening is easy - a few gentle strokes with a saw file on the cutting lips and then remove any bur underneath. Some of the bits have "spurs" that score...

    Easiest Blade and Chisel Sharpening

true - I meant using pritt stick it in addition to the clamps - the clamps hold it taught and the pritt stick to help preventing it from "riding up" around the blade/sole etc Re your BSA, coincidentally I am restoring an old Honda c90 and have just done the top end - I do plan to hone the...

    Easiest Blade and Chisel Sharpening

Jacob you seem to have succumbed to some weird modern fetish about white spirts and wet and dry sandpaper - this is most out of character! I was going to give the old w+d another go (like everyone else I find it rips apart with in minutes when I try it) but now I see that the secret to your...

    Protecting cedar cladding

it is true that it does not need treating, but it does not always fade to an attractive uniform grey and can go blotchy (particularly where water splashes back on to it). I treated the cedar cladding on my garden office/workshop with Rystix Timbacare - looked good, and survived well in full...
