coffee table design - robust enough?

I have now swapped both my horrible furniture-land side tables with Richard-Maquire-esque replacements and (predictably) have now been told the coffee table has to go too. I would like to keep to the same design if possible but guess I will have to beef up the apron and legs slightly (they...

    practical cap-irons - a question

thanks all for the good advice -- based on the above I gave it a light swipe with sandpaper and started applying the wax-oil. Andy, it would never of occured to me to use my vac while hand-sanding - what a clever idea. How long do the abraisives last compared to sandpaper?

    SCREWDRIVERS

I had read the same thing about the philips screw head design and uncritically assumed it to be correct - there was a plausible sounding explanation (something along the lines of it being preferable in industry to break a screw than over tighten it and break the part that was being held in place...

    practical cap-irons - a question

having enjoyed the various cap-iron discussions in the past I am continuing to experiment with them to reduce tear out. As I have said elsewhere although you can learn a lot from trial and error, one of the challenges of picking up skills on your own is that it is hard to be able to tell what...

    Low back welsh chair build

great stuff - are you finding yourself using it as a seat for any other tasks? I occasionally declutter my saw horse (which of course is generally upended and covered in tools!) and use it as a seat and it is very comfortable for some tasks (e.g chiseling out). Is this part of the attraction...

    Thomas Firth & Sons

Here is another one that might interest to steel fans (I did bother to check this time and I don't think it has been shared already!) a black and white silent film taken at Edgar Allen in 1939 (apologies I think it is may not be viewable outside of the UK). Lots of interesting processes shown...

    Google Home or Mini?

the google version was released several months after the US and they obviously spent a fair amount of time on localization (it even knows some cockney rhyming slang!)

    Google Home or Mini?

quite right BM! just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't watching you - think on!

    Google Home or Mini?

I have had a Google Home for the past few weeks and the only thing I ever say to it is 'play radio 4' Although 'she' gets it right about 50% of the time, the rest of the time she is confused, 'can't help with that at the moment' or tries to play 'my' grunge playlist on spotify. Seriously, you...

    Thomas Firth & Sons

doh! sorry andy I must have missed that one - I should have searched here first :) in case this adds a bit of colour to the pictures (forgive the pun), one of the things I found when digging about following my reading of 'Sheffield Steel' was this court case from 1884, where the owner of the...

    Thomas Firth & Sons

following recommendations on this forum to get a copy of Sheffield Steel by KC Barraclough I noticed that some of the pictures were from a promotional leaflet produced by Thos Firth and Sons, and this led me to this high quality scan on archive.org. In case you have not seen it, the leaflet...

Evolution of the Record 52 1/2 quick release vice

the differences are subtle - that will all be in the next thrill packed edition of this thread :)

Evolution of the Record 52 1/2 quick release vice

reminded that I need to get on with concluding this thread I now need to confess that I am stuck. Please let me know if you can help with the dates for the next version of the vice: given all my warblings about the registered design model I am convinced this later version must have been made...

    side table

it is just screwed on - apparently using a slightly gappy halving joint in the aprons is enough to allow the wood in the top to move. Do oversized holes do the same thing (or are they needed as well?!)

    side table

thanks Will. Here is the finished table - the ebonizing process shows up a few bumps and scratches that were not obvious when the wood was paler, but overall I am pleased with the result. This is a good beginners project I think - it is straightforward but the simple design encourages you to...

Evolution of the Record 52 1/2 quick release vice

thanks squib - that's an interesting one. it might have been made by Smiths Marks and co - Can you make out a patent number on the handle?

    side table

bit hard to tell with my crappy camera phone/lack of photographic abilities but following the application of a couple of layers of wax oil the legs are now jet black. Final pic of the finished table tomorrow...

    Vintage Record Vise

    PS the 52 has 7'' jaws and opens to 8'', and the 52 1/2 has 9'' jaws and opens to 13 ''. There is also a 53 (10 1/2 '' jaws, 15'' opening)

    Vintage Record Vise

to save you the trouble of wading through the entire Record vice thread, this is the model I think represents the pinnacle of Record's vices - note round boss and distinctive face casting. If you can get a 52 1/2 "A" then even better (this has a metal cover that runs the length of the screw to...

    side table

as predicted by Custard, applying the top coat makes it go a deeper jet black - will post the final result tomorrow when there is better light to take a pic
