    Holiday advice

Si You could look at the northern coast of Brittany, West of St Malo. It’s usually cheaper if you go a bit inland and then drive to the coast. Several beaches on this coast have plaques commemorating escapes by British and allied servicemen, especially pilots. Also Rennes is quite...

    how bigs your shop?

Quick answer, TOO SMALL, even though, like Tenon, it looed quite big when I put it up. The trouble is, I have also had to store the ephemera of 3 daughters in there as well!!! It is actually 12ft x 14ft Phil

    EON Electric

My experience of EON EON are our suppliers of infrastructure so we have no alternative there. We needed a meter moved round the corner – 2ft! Cost - £500 required as an up front payment, ordered in Oct of 2006, done in April 2007. Time taken by 2 men to do the work – 2.5 hours. EON, there...

    Electric Lamp fittings.

I hope that someone out there can help me. Do you know what the thread is on a normal lamp fitting is. I know that the outside diameter is ½ in (nominal), but what thread? I am looking to buy the correct die to thread steel tube to take light fittings. Yes I know that I will need them PAT...

    Food Processor Advice please

Generally I love the Kenwood. However, the limited capacity and girth of the liquidiser for anything other than fully liquid ingredients is the main reason that I would like a food processor as well. I borrow my parent's FP for making pate and the like. However having used it, I would only...

Watch your credit card statements, chaps

Here’s another Lloyds customer who nearly had £400 done out of his account. Again thumbs up to Lloyds’ fraud people except for one tiny thing, it was a recorded message with a number to ring back, but as I was out and about, I could not write it down quickly enough so I had to go back via the...

    Brainiacs

Incidentally, the lowest temperature at which water can exist as a liquid is a lot lower than you might guess. Any offers? Shall I tell you? Approx -42 degrees C. Mind you it must be VERY pure so that there are no ‘specs’ of dust for example round which ice can start forming. When water...

How long have you been turning?

I had a 2 day course given to me by my late father in 1996 (with Reg Slack) and have been turning since then. However due to work (or sometimes unemployment) it has not been a smooth continuous curve upwards, more a series of peaks and troughs! I have however always belonged to turning clubs...

    Dm show any bargains

I went on Friday as I was on my way back from Kent to Worcestershire. As I needed a basic jig saw I had a look round and found a Black & Decker which came with a free car vacuum worth £25.00+, so a bargain I thought. Also got some soft jaws which were out of stock so had them at a show price...

Westonbirt Festival of the Tree - next weekend!

If anyone wants to see someone making a fool of themselves, come to the Gloucestershire Association of Woodturners tent on Friday morning where I may be demonstrating. All things being equal. Phil

    POLL ===== Segmented Turning ?

Voted Marmite, even though I actually like marmite!! There is a difference between segmented which whislt SOMETIMES very clever is often either over done, or looks like someone has too much plank wood and can not find another use for it! and Laminated which very often produces starling effects...

    Chucking Recesses

Well let’s wade into this one. I’m with the majority so far, decorate the chucking recess and leave it. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly as has been pointed out, it is really only other turners who look, just as they are the only ones who put their fingers inside a hollow form...

Calling All Cack Handed Turners...!!! ;~)

Although I am right handed, I do find that I turn spindles with either hand and I guess that the difficulty that those ‘sinister’ turners experience is when working on the face plate ie bowls, hollowing boxes etc. It occurred to me though, that if you have a lathe with a rotating headstock...

    making louver door

Jamie Can't really help, but this always reminds me of a friend's father who read an article years ago (late '50s - Barry Bucknell?!) and wanted to do the same. Apparently the instructions started 'Have made a pair of louvered doors!!!!!'. Clearly it is easier to get someone else to do the...

Let the world in or Shut the Sun out?

Well the sun seems to have gone away again to play somewhere else! I have my shed located in a barn. As a result I can keep the door open without fear of interruptions etc. It also means that it is relatively cool in summer and I don't spend so much on heating it in winter. Luckily the...

Insulation (yes, again, and I have searched, honest...)

Mike For what it’s worth, I insulated my shed using normal fibreglass which is held in place by sheets of hardboard. This is easy to cut to size, light-weight to hold and easy to fix with screws or nails. Phil

    Schools and snow

Dedee, you are right to say that articulated lorries should be banned in this weather. Not only do we hear constant reports of knife-jacked lorries causing blockages to the roads in snowy conditions, but I actually saw 2 when driving home on Wednesday from Orpington to Tewkesbury. Due to M3 &...

Pen - what wood? ....a very small competition....

A quick punt, if I may suggest, rippled Sweet Chestnut. Quite seasonal and I see some every day as I walk the dog.

brass etc powder inlays & wood worm

Miles Consider this way of killing wood worm. Turn bowl, insert in microwave, put on low/defrost of 2/3 sessions of 1min or so; end of woodworm! Obviously will only work with a bowl that fits in the oven! And, ensure you do it when there is no one around!!!!
