Would you buy a grade 2 listed cottage?

Agreed. Plus, don't touch thatched places, the cost of insurance especially if you have an open fire!! Phil

    R.I.P Kris.

Yes, and who knew that he, like President Clinton, was a Rhodes Scholar! In many ways and unsung hero, though his songs were sung by so many. Phil

    Waste disposal

I know I don't produce as many shavings etc, but I give all of mine to the gardener of a large house and he uses it in his compost bins to balance out the green matter ie grass and hedge trimmings. But, in Gloucestershire, when I do go to the tip, I have to book. When this started, during the...

    Gotten

Yes, there is, but subtle! Swimming could include watching or swimming yourself whilst Swim relates specifically to something you like to do.

    Gotten

Don't forget that the Romans wrote with, essentially no punctuation and, certai9nly on gravestones, a huge number of shortened words which clearly the population understood, but, unless you are Mary Beard, you struggle to understand! Thanks goodness Latin to English translation of JC's De Bello...

Sanding discs on the lathe, do you glue them on or use something like velcro?

I sometime use Spraymount or similar, easy to peal off. Phil

It's not every day (for Kittyhawk)

I project managed some work at RAF Bently Priory before it was sold. At the front was a Spitfire and a Lightning. They were, as the Pilot Officer said proudly, 'Real'. Unlike those at RAF Hendon which she referred to as 'Airfix Corner'!

    Five favourite quotes.

From Work:- 'Promoted to the level of their incompetence!' Often said of useless managers when you wonder how they got to that position. I've had two of these in the past! Also, see below paraphrased from John Ruskin!

What wood would and what wood wouldn't make your preferred species to work with.

For turning, Yew, Laburnum and anything spalted are favourites. The colour and variations are amazing. Walnut is nice as well especially if you have the heart and sap wood. I don't do much carpentry, but Tulip wood can be decorative if you get the green coloured heart in somehow. Phil

Woodworking & craft shows and events…

Not really a true 'Craft Show', but with plenty of country crafts, a craft tent, food tent, animals, steam tractors etc it's hard to beat the Frampton Show on Sunday 8th Sept. Just to encourage you, I have a small stand in the Craft Tent and my local wood turning club, Gloucestershire...

    Centre Bits & Wood Turning

I sometimes use one when I am drilling 'soft' wood, especially spalted wood when making pens. They do give a very good and accurate start point. I got mine off the inevitable 'Bay for a reasonable price knowing I would not be drilling metal! Phil

    TV advertising quality!

The trouble with ads now is that there are so few things you can advertise! My old favourites were the Hamlet cigar ads and the Campari adverts with real actors, Joan Collins and Leonard Rossiter Phil

    Tissue for lathe work

As can Friction Polish, so I do exactly as stated above, finger under the cloth at the bottom of the turning Phil

Post a photo of the last thing you turned

Spent a nice afternoon turning these Nutmeg Graters for the Frampton Show on 8th Sept. Hope they sell well!

Yes, agreed, a Satire' thread would be good.

Cloned Number Plates...just a word of warning!

I regret to say, a few years back, on holiday in the Lake District, out of season, I found a way of defeating the ANP system at a car park. I inadvertently went in via the exit to a small car park, parked, went round the town, came back to pay, entered my number and was very surprised to see...

    Joke Thread 4 (closed).

What about Wyre Piddle in Worcestershire built on Piddle Brook!! Some enterprising person a few years back bottled the water there and sold it as..... Yes, you've guessed it Piddle Water! In the next villages to me, there is also a 'Squitter Brook' which runs into Carrant Brook and thus to...

Potential sites for new mega-solar farms

I unashamedly eat meat. If I have beef, it is from local producers who I know graze year round with only hay as an 'Input'. Chicken and Pork are more problematic of course, but I do ensure they are at least British sourced so well looked after and with low food miles. The trouble with a...

    Winter fuel Payments.

Quite sensible given that we don't seem, in most of England, to have winters any more. All we have are 2 seasons, Rain incessantly and a few days of sun!! Gone are the days of heavy snow and long periods of freezing weather as 1962/63 or the early 1980s. Phil

    Price of Fuel

There must be a lot of pigs flying around Shepton!! Just near us GCC filled in some pot holes on a very bad section but left others unfilled!!!
