    CarvingTurnings

Hi Can anyone help? I have a customer who would like some lettering round the rim of a pair of platters. This is well beyond my skill so does anyone have a contact not too far from Tewkesbury who might give me an indicative price? Phil

Sad News - Ray Key BEM

Simon I heartily agree, I never saw him demonstrating, but at one time he had a shop in Evesham (he lived in one of the local villages) where my wife and I bought a couple of items which we still have. Rather strangely, I also met him on the train from Evesham to London a couple of times and...

    Sloe time of year.

Agree with freezing, much the best idea. We always add sugar to taste as we decant off the sloes. Normal ratio of sloes to gin is just cover and then shake the bottles regularly. We made a whole load a few years back for our daughter's wedding the following summer where we put it in with...

    Bargain

From one Phil to another Yes, you're absolutely right. In the UK, the public will pay stupid amounts for items on shops because that's what it says on the price tag. They do not really value the work, design and the fact that they are looking at a hand made object. Even though I don't make...

which scroll chuck should I get for my coronet minor?

Guys I have two different sized Record chucks, bought during their Summer or Winter dals. They have a good choice of jaws and I have a Coronet Major they give no trouble there! Phi

    Hello from John

Lazurus That must be where I'm going wrong!! Seriously, as a starter a Coronet is good. I still use my father's Coronet Major, though I have added a speed control! Phil

    Which Chuck To Choose?

The big question is, why only get 1 chuck, you know that you will need a second one to save constant changing!!! Phil (with 3 chucks)

Kevin I don't know what you make, other than noise and dust!! However, a small gift made using your router etc might be a good idea. Phil

    An English Mount Rushmore?

This is not a new idea. If you go to the National Trust gardens at Stowe (in North Buckinghamshire, not On the Wold) you will see a 'Temple' called the 'British Worthies' put up in the 18th C. There are 16 of which only 1, Elizabeth I is the only woman. Amongst others are some well known...

    Sawmills/timber sales

Thanks for the reminder Chris, but as I am a closet Yorkshireman, I'm looking for deals!!! After all, it's the middlemen who make the money!! Phil

    Sawmills/timber sales

I'm just of for a week to South Devon, not far from Honiton, and I was wondering if any turner in the area could suggest local suppliers especially for bits of Oak (pippy if possible) and Sycamore/Maple? Thanks in advance

NICEST Town to Live in if you want Weather/Outdoor stuff?

Quite right about depth of pocket. Oxford has the greatest difference between earnings and house prices. It is VERY pricy but the good thing is that it is bike friendly and car averse. Try driving round Oxford at any time of the day without sitting in a jam. Also avoid well know places like...

    Heating oil tank

It must be me, I was going to give a reply on heating up your oil tank to make the oil flow better!!! However, one thing to remember is to make it as hard as possible to access the new one - oil prices are rising and theft of oil in country areas has been quite a problem. Phil

    Nuisance phone calls

I seem to have had a spate of calls about my car 'accident'. Mostly from 0161. Apart from the fact hat I try to string term along by asking which car and whereabouts this happened, I now save the number with the name 'Do not answer 01' or 02 etc. I'm on 12 at the moment. ps, don't try...

    The Repair Shop

Quite right Geoff. This is as much a 'People Interest' programme as anything else. Would those who are winging prefer to see it all in real time? I have much better thing to do. Like reading posts on this excellent site! (hammer) Phil

    Biscuit barrel lid fit....fitting

Two things Firstly, a seal is needed to keep biscuits from going soggy. As we all know, stale biscuits go soft, cakes go hard, this is what won a VAT exemption for Jaffa Cakes. Secondly, why not look in a Junk/Charity shop for a ceramic barrel, and re-use the lid? :D Phil

    Penkits UK

Hi I don't know if anyone else uses this company for their kits, but I've just been to their site to find that the owner is giving up. Really sad to see this as I have always had good service with a wide range of kits at very reasonable process. Needless to say, I ordered what I could, but...
