Build or buy kitchen base units?

Martin, congratulations to you both on the birth of your son. I went down the 'make your own units' road. I went for MFC, which I bought through a local timber merchant, cost about £22/ sheet (8'x4'). I planned the layout and worked out the sizes of each part for the units. I used a program...

    Holding round wood for bandsawing

A bandsaw rip sled like this would do the job. Not too difficult to knock together.

Bathroom cabinet now a pile of scrap

Hi Dave, thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations with the rest of us. I think for most people the tendency is to keep quiet about our failures, so well done for having the courage to post this this one. Do you think your glue may have gone off? If PVA glues get frozen (think shed/garage...

    Good Kid

I saw the wee guy interviewed on the news tonight...much mor deserving of the Quees's galantry medal than the guy who tackled the would-be terrorist at Glasgow airport. Unfortunately the attacker got a reduced sentence for a guilty plea.

do i need a sliding mitre saw?

As a hobby woodworker/DIYer I have a Triton Workcentre as my table saw. I have a sliding table and crosscut sled for it and it can also convert to crosscut mode which has most of the functionallity of a SCMS. However, changing from tablesaw to crosscut mode is a pain with the dust collection kit...

    Original B&D Workmate

I made a new jaw for my Workmate (a skip find with the front jaw missing). The original jaws were 1" thick ply so I laminated a new one from 3/4" birch ply and a strip of 1/4". I had to guess at the positioning of the dog holes but it works just fine.

    I made a rabbet plane

A beautiful piece of work, well done. Watch out Philly, you have a rival

    £2.50 stool

Is it a sign of age when we sit around discussing our stools? I'll get me coat

    Face masks

Another vote for the AirAce from me. I also have the add-on visor which is another £14 or so but well worth it IMO.

    HELP WITH A HVLP GUN

DeVilbiss are top line spray guns but very expensive (maybe worth it if you are a pro). You can have a dedicated HVLP setup for the price of the gun alone.

    HELP WITH A HVLP GUN

You need a compressor with at least a 50 litre tank to use an HVLP spray gun . My 25 L compressor struggles even with a HP gun, so I got a dedicated HVLP kit with its own turbine (B&Q, £50, no longer on the market unfortunately).

    Drawing an arc

I saw a web article that used this type of setup but the "compass" was clamped to a router table with a straight bit where the pencil goes in Niki's version. A couple of pins in the workpiece ride against the legs of the compass and the piece is moved past the bit to create the arc...

Lee Valley - Another 30th Anniversery Tool

I quite fancied getting one of these but they are out of stock at the moment and not re-stocking until the end of June  Let us know what you think of it in terms of accuracy and reproducibility of angles etc. as it seems an awful lot cheaper than other electronic angle finders on the market.

    Cutting bricks with mitre saw

I'd also go for the angle grinder rather than risk ruining my mitre saw.

    Drawing an arc

I've seen a similar method described before but I had the impression that you needed to know the radius of the arc you wanted to draw and had to calculate the angle between the two arms of the compass. Your excellent explanation and pictures makes it much clearer...brilliant. I will certainly be...

Mobile Mitre Saw station - FINISHED

I have hooked up my 'shop vac to my DW703 CMS and it only gets 50% of the dust (maybe even less). I'm thinking about a box at the back of the bench to catch the worst of it, like the one shown here.

    Thank You Nick (Jetman)

Mike, how about a mini review of the spotblaster when you have had a chance to try it out. it sounds like a handy addition to the workshop.

    Virgin Bessey

I know that the principle is the same but the practice is somewhat different. I don't suffer the exterme reaction that Roger seems to suffer from but it rates somewhere above "mild irritation" at times. Do you think some form of lubricant on the bars would help? I think there would be enough of...

    Moving Broadband connector box.

I was with Telewest up to about 4 years ago. I'm pretty sure the fibre optic cable stopped at the junction box in the street and the connection to the house was with copper co-ax.

    Virgin Bessey

I have four 1000 mm Bessey K bodies and I think they are the bee's knees. I bought that size for their versatility but they are big and heavy so when I needed some 600 mm clamps I jumped at the Rutlands special offer. They looked similar to K bodies but were, alas, part of a faulty batch so I...
