Leave BS in tension or not??

So has anybody anywhere actually reported a problem known to result from leaving a bandsaw tensioned all the time ? If I didn't have to go and bbq some dinner I might google and see what's out in internet land and whether there are lots of reports of actual problems or just speculation that it...

    Rootball WIP

Might be interesting to lose most of the top thin bit Pete if it doesn't look to have much figuring, and have a more circular form with the hole at the top end ? You're closer and more creative than me though :) Will be interesting to see what comes out of it. Cheers, Paul

    What kind of axe?

Carpenters axe for woodworking stuff, Swedish carving axe for carving and spoon making and stuff, Small Forest Axe (SFA) for bushcrafty/camping stuff, or all three perhaps and the wildlife hatchet if wanting to carry something smaller when camping :) I'm currently down to the carving one and a...

Leave BS in tension or not??

Makes it quicker to change a blade and then set back to the same tension (if the same size of blade) ? I've never left my startrite de-tensioned in the last dozen years or so and never noticed any problems with blades, tyres or spring. Cheers, Paul

Finishing oak bench for outside use

It's the nature of oak to turn silvery grey with age, and to stain black if in contact with iron. My thoughts would be to recognise that and not fight it, or go for a different material, maybe western red cedar or iroko if wood, or plastic resin if not   It's a losing battle to...

chestnut food safe oil - what is it like?

It seems to be liquid paraffin (mineral oil) with some added dryers as far as I can tell. Used it on a few salad bowls to good effect and fine to wipe down with a damp cloth. Needs reapplying every so often as it does seem to dry out over time and a quick refresh brings the item back to life...

Not so good, can't make an apple :(

It is surprisingly difficult to get a convincing apple shape, pears and eggs likewise I find ! Usually takes a few go's to get the eye in and then you're away :) Cheers, Paul

    Who knows about weed-killers please?

I believe it's quite tasty as a salad leaf or a veg Rob, but best google it to be sure before eating ! You might as well enjoy it while you get rid of it  Cheers, Paul

    So What

So, finished batch of dibbers ! Decided that the teak oil wasn't doing much for the maple other than yellowing it, so abandoned that and instead went down to 180 grit and then a burnish with the wood shavings which gave a nice tactile smooth finish. \used some formica laminate offcut to...

    Dust bags for Record DX5000

Have a look on the Axi' site I'm sure they do some in different sizes. Just measure round the circumference of the extractor and get something a bit bigger than that ? They are reusable many times over with care so not as bad cost wise as first seems although if somebody else has a cheap source...

    3 wheel buffing system

Out of interest I have just spent a few minutes on the Polishing Shop website. I haven't spent the time to figure out the exact comparable product specs but assembling a similar three mop kit, abrasives and wax, and a simple pigtail mount would total to something around £45 as best I can figure...

    Dealing with split boards

It occurred to me over breakfast that if you were going to be using waney edge boards quite often it could be worth making up a sled to replicate the use of a sliding table. Made from a piece of ply or similar with a straight edge for running against the fence, and two or three toggle type...

    Dealing with split boards

To take off the waney edge, if you don't have a sliding table, you can screw or pin an existing straight edged board or piece of ply on top of the waney edge boardwith the straight edge protruding to the side of the waney edge. This then gives a usable straight edge to run along the bandsaw or...

    So What

Good idea ! I have tried making a couple of these in the past, never really found them particularly good to use and swmbo, aka Head Gardener, couldn't be bothered messing around with bits of newspaper either, which is a shame as it's useful recycling. Another half dozen dibbers and some smaller...

    So What

 Fun and satisfying to use too, very effective. Would have used a draw knife on them instead of putting them through the bandsaw afterwards, but still haven't got around to making a shave horse. might need to get round to that shortly.... Cheers, Paul

    So What

I've started on a mini production run of garden dibbers for a charity plant and garden sale my sister's doing next month, quite therapeutic once I got the proportions and design sorted ! Using some of our large maple tree we took down last spring. Need to do a few more yet and some smaller...
