    Clifton planes

Before I bought my Cliftons I had a good few Lie-Nielsens that I was more than happy with. But then I saw and tried a Clifton 5 1/2 at a forum get together and was totally taken with it ! The Lie-Nielsens I respected as the fine tools they were, but I loved the Cliftons, they had character and...

    Lie Nielsen tools

Yep, if you look at other posts from the same source they are invariably much the same, chips on both shoulders, another one on the ignore list ! :)

    Lie Nielsen tools

Not sure if they are heavier, but it was the weight and handling of a Clifton 5 1/2 I tried out that first made an impression on me, and the aesthetics are just lovely ! :)

    Lie Nielsen tools

Treated myself to the No.3, 4 1/2, 5 1/2 and 7 at the time as I had intended to get into box and small cabinet making when time permitted. The 7 would have been overkill for that, maybe only needed the 4 1/2 to be fair but, well, shiny tools and all that ! :) Have since found that I tend to...

    Pointless, frustrating and dangerous !

    Wood cutting axe

Pictures would help, but if the axe head is slipping down the plastic shaft then it sounds like it may be a tapered shaft with a slight bulge at the head end, in which case knock the head back firmly onto the tapered head end. Similar to mattocks and pick axes with tapered wooden handles...

    Is there a chuck?

Pen mandrels often come on a morse taper I think, just take the chuck off and use the mandrel direct in the spindle morse taper, assuming it has one of course but most lathes do :)

    Drill for tailstock

For drilling large holes in end grain on the lathe I used to use saw toothed forstner bits, but they are quite slow and tend to overheat quite easily. Now using these type...

    Shaving

I quickly discovered various electric razors weren't for me, poor results and chewed up skin ! Went over to wet shaving with disposable multi blade razors and cans of foam for many years with much better results. Later still I discovered double edge safety razors and proper soaps and creams, a...

    Carbide tipped woodturning irons

It's well worth doing and very satisfying :) Made mine with just a grinding wheel and pro edge, drill and a tap for threading. I made up different shafts for different shaped cutters and scrapers and just swap them over in the hollow handle when needed.

    Sorby Pro Edge Coarse Belts

I use 40g ceramic on occasion for serious reshaping, any of the lower grits should work well although the lower the grit you use the more time you'll then spend on the next grits up to refine the grind I guess ?!!
