    Combined sharpening syatem

Why do you think that BB ? As DougB has said, belts are available in all sorts of grits including the trizact polishing belts at around 3000 grit ! The Tormek system has had it's day in my view, best out there for many years, but if coming to the market for a solution now I would personally...

Why is epoxy not used more often for sealing timber drainers

Wooden worktops, and especially drainers, need regular maintenance, it's unrealistic to expect them to perform like granite or corian or similar. Cheers, Paul

    Jet or Wivamac

You've lost me there BM, way too technical for me, I'll stick to my instinct that more is ultimately better  Enjoy your new lathe when it arrives Alan, as I said up front, they are both good machines and I'm sure you won't be dissapointed :D Cheers, Paul

    Jet or Wivamac

I think they do ship now with a separate magnetic control box Duncan, so that's probably fine then and obviates the need to move the main box. On my earlier model they didn't have the separate control box on a lead, hence my mod, gives me some magnetic rack storage for tools too on the same...

    Jet or Wivamac

Same here Duncan, I mounted the box on a free standing timber frame at a good working height and can move it around to be close to hand as needed. Also wired up a magnetic mounted emergency stop button that can be positioned anywhere useful such as hip height for no hands use. Cheers, Paul

    Jet or Wivamac

Interesting, makes me wonder why we don't all drive around in cars with just two gears, or bicycles even ? Perhaps there are fundamental differences in efficiency or power delivery characteristics that render the analogy invalid, I'm not technical enough to know ! Seems to me that the two...

    Jet or Wivamac

The Jet seems to be a good machine too, and if the price difference is significant then it must be tempting, don't think you'll go far wrong with either :) Cheers, Paul

    Jet or Wivamac

The wivamac headstock locking was an occasional minor annoyance for me, but only needed a spanner top and bottom. I superglued the top nut in place inside the headstock and added a hefty bristol lever underneath, works great, just turn the lever and slide the headstock and nip the lever up...

What to do with old oak

Welcome to the forum Billyboy ! If you don't mind me saying so you're going about it back to front ! :) The trunk is what may interest furniture makers or joiners or others, and the limb wood is generally more suited to firewood, although some can be of interest to turners/carvers. If the...

I already chose the Wivamac  Both good machines though. Cheers, Paul

Vices - Fitting a Record Bench Vice

Hi Chris, danish oil is fine and won't stay sticky if you wipe off any surplus after ten minutes or so, it will dry hard in one to two days, maybe quicker if warm. It does make the jaws a little shiney/slippery though, so maybe just leave them untreated and see how you get on ? Cheers, Paul

    Palletising of timber and machinery

It's a sensible question Roger ! Pea shingle driveway in front of the garage doors so could be a problem. Hoping to reverse a truck close enough so that the tail lift will land on the garage concrete floor. Should work okay, access is good to the front of the workshop. Cheers, Paul

    Palletising of timber and machinery

Thanks for the advice, and I thought the tail lift would be the easy bit ! Off to pick up a pallet truck in the morning, an ebay winning for £40, supposed to be in good working order but we'll see !!! Cheers, Paul

    Jet 4224B Lathe

Don't think they do Graham, but still very good lathes indeed ! Cheers, Paul

    Palletising of timber and machinery

Thanks guys, had a busy day in the workshop and shed yesterday sorting through and cutting up some timber so didn't get a chance to google much and obviously didn't use the best search terms either as I didn't come up with much ! The wikihow is helpful, seems to rely on catching some layers of...

    Palletising of timber and machinery

Due to some impending building work I probably need to move a lot of workshop equipment and timber into storage for a while, and think it would be most practical to put a lot of it onto pallets for ease of handling and movement. Things like timber turning blanks could be stacked on pallets and...

Coronet No 3 Bowl turning question

I used to have a CL3 (same machine essentially I think), and think you would find the motor would struggle to turn that size blank, or at least would stall easily when you try to take a cut with a gouge, as well as the reservations others have mentioned. I upgraded to a big wivamac to be able...
