Newbie: Am I doing something wrong?

Being snarky and rude and generally hard work isn't the best way to get help and assistance, just saying.....

    If Carlsberg made knives.....

Really interesting video, thanks. Don't forget the particular application for that knife, being an antartic research mission, which would inform the choice of blade material, size and shape and materials of handle and or sheath too. While an O1 bladed, wooden handle and leather sheath for...

    Independent Financial advice.

I'm thinking that there may be capital gains tax issues too where the parent's home is owned by the offspring, if the children already have their own home as principle private residence, then when the parents home is eventually sold the children would be liable to CGT on any increase in value on...

Anyone use a knife sharpening "gadget"?

Yep, it's easy enough to do, no rocket science involved  Once sharp they can then be easily maintained in the kitchen for a good while with your choice of steel, or in my case a fallkniven diamond hone and ceramic hone. The diamond hone really does away with the need to go back to the...

Storage of cast iron and similar tools

Thought I might as well use some of that wax stuff I linked to above on the bandsaw table today. Not ready to move into storage yet but as I was cleaning up a bit anyway. Reminded me why I hadn't used it much before, it's so stiff as to be near unspreadable, even though it's not particularly...

Storage of cast iron and similar tools

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, plenty to think about there. It's interesting about the polythene sheets, cling film, or presumably pallet wrap ? I had thought of that and couldn't decide if it would actually cause a problem with condensation on the inside of the sheet/wrap and then...

Storage of cast iron and similar tools

There'll not be any electric hookup unless I run a temporary overground cable from somewhere, but the shed has open eaves where the corrugated cement board roof meets the wall plate, and a fairly loose fitting door, so there will be continual air flow to some extent, rather than a fairly well...

Storage of cast iron and similar tools

To date the cast iron tables on my bandsaw and table saw, and the steel on the lathe beds, has all been fine in my workshop which is reasonably dry and gets a little background heat during the winter. The occasional coat of liberon lubricating wax helps keeps everything rust free too. Due to...

    Windsor chair making

Can't help with any feedback unfortunately Tony as haven't done similar myself yet, but sounds like great fun and very interesting too I should think :) Cheers, Paul

    Purpleheart bed WIP

Nice work :) Will the finish stop the timber reverting back to a brown colour over time do you think ? Cheers, Paul

Glad you got it sorted out. Wonder what they meant by mismatched though, still none the clearer ! :) Cheers, Paul

    what are CLIFTON doing.....

Seems to me that the paint thing has people falling almost exclusively into two camps, those that don't care as long as the tools do the job in hand, and those that do care and with some passion (sensible or logical or not !). There seems a marked lack of those that dislike the green paint to...

    Finally got to the lathe

What did you finish the bowl with Rob, looks good ? :) Might even do some turning myself after weeks of cutting up blanks on the bandsaw, about time I made something of a few of them !!! Cheers, Paul

Anyone got to the D&M show this weekend?

Just back from a quick visit this morning. Picked up a dmt extra extra coarse 8x3" diamond plate for a (relative) bargain £85 including two leather cases blagged for free :) I have some other grades of the same plates so that one will compliment the others nicely. Also took away a naked bosch...

    Air rifles anyone?

Sounds good :) I've been through A weirauch break barrel underlever (97 model maybe, I forget) which was great but single shot and very heavy, a bsa superten which I loved, it was ugly but great shot capacity and very accurate. Then a weirauch hw100, just as accurate but weighed a ton again...

    Gall stones

I had the same a few years back, was in absolute agony at times and it took several weeks and visits to the doctor who was useless, and in the end self diagnosis of my skin turning yellow with jaundice, before I got sent for ultrasound and the operator said something like it looked really badly...

Has anyone tried the Aldi chainsaw

Hi Phil, the grease point on mine, a couple of huskies, stihl and makita, oregon replacement bars too, is the small hole in the outer bar skin near the nose sprocket. You just take the grease gun (small push type you normally get with the saws) and locate the nose in the indent and press, then...
