    Update on blades

Wilkinson's in the scroll sawers mecca. I get everything from Wilko's, why, because the things they stock I have found to be the best despite trying many other brands from various outlets over the years. I buy my masking tape from there, along with clear packagine tape, stick glue and teak oil...

    Update on blades

Alex, you could straighten it out, give it a clean, re-sharpen it with a needle file and then flog it. Actually some people are so tight they have tried to re-sharpen their blades and one guy I know turns the gas out when he turns the bacon over. Joking apart. I can easily get through 30 blades...

    Update on blades

Hi Alex. A very good question you pose. A blade will last around 20 minutes of cutting time. Obviously the blade will cut slower as it becomes dull, another sign a blade is on it's way out is when it becomes a little harder to keep the blade to the line of the pattern being cut. Sometimes though...

    Update on blades

I wrote an article on blades some time back and quite recently I have been experiencing a few anomalies with the blades I have been using. Over many years I feel that I have used most of the blades available to the scroll saw user and I also feel, without wishing to boast in any way that I get...

    Excalibur 16

I bought my Excalibur from an independant tool shopthat was close to home. I suppose they were some sort of agent for Axminster. Before I returned the saw back to the dealer I knew I would have trouble getting a refund from them as the shop was in dire straights. I rang the department of fair...

    How I prepare the wood

Many thanks for all your kind comments. Brian, Yes, you have to watch the fingers, especially on some of the smaller pieces, never had a miss hap though, the worst thing that ever happened was when my finger came into contact with the blade on the scroll saw and at 1700 strokes per minute left a...

    Another Mac question

What I have done this morning is to disconnect everything non essential including the back up drive. I then re-booted in safe...

    Another Mac question

Hi Guys. Two weeks ago I replaced my aging i Mac with a mini Mac 2. I bought an Asus 27 inch monitor to go with it. As I don't have a TV set I also bought a blu ray player, a DVD re-writer and I have a 1 terabyte external back up drive. I have used all the USB ports on the back of the mini Mac...

    Computer question

Many thanks guys for all your imput. I am indeed spoilt for choice. The dell speaker system I have in very old so I think for my needs like watching DVDs and listening to music a new set of creatives will do the job just nicely. I am not looking for perfection, just a decent sound. many thanks...

    .........

Very nice Brian. I love all the very fine detail you have put into that, especially the leather seat, it looks so real. It was always my dram to have a Goldwong, the nearest I got to it was a CX500 shaft drive I called the beast.

    How I prepare the wood

I get a few enquiries relating to wood preparation and the best way to tackle a project so I thought I would share the process for the benefit of the newer members. Firstly my wood comes to me planed and I do nothing to it at this stage apart from cutting off pieces to suit the patterns I am...

    The cost of progress

Many thanks for all your comments. Tim. On the old i Mac I had photo shop and firefox along with affinity designer and I am in the process of getting new up to date copies. I use work for most of my name signs as it is so quick. Brian. I nearly bought one of those wacon tablets some years ago...

    The cost of progress

It has been very quiet on the forum in recent weeks so I thought I would share what I have been up to the last few days. As most of you know I use my scroll saw to make things that I sell at craft fairs and at the moment things are going very well. One of the things I have to do on a regular...

    Computer question

I have just upgraded my computer system but would stress my knowledge is limited, I don't know the in's and outs but enough to do what I have to do. I had a ten year old i Mac and have changed that for a Mac mini 2.6 Ghz. Got a 27 inch monitor and connected to the computer and the monitor is a...

    What's it called

I have a small wooden mirror and a wooden base I have made. I want to get my hand on a fitting where I screw one end to the base and the other to the back of the mirror and I would like the mirror to be adjustable when it is standing on a flat surface, like ladies can adjust it for makle up etc...

    Pen holders

It is not often that I get a pattern from Steve Good that I feel I can use but now and again he does come up with a cracker and I felt the pen holders would be a good addition to my craft fair display so made a few today. I used a few different woods, the main wood in walnut followed by red oak...

    Poppy plaques

I finally got the poppy plaques finished. I must remember not to take on commissions like this again. They are 22 inches long by 10 inches wide. I cut all my plaques on the scroll saw but the Hegner only has an 18 inch throat. I tried coming in from both ends but the start of the cut is so far...

    Design Idea

I tried a similar type of tree a few years ago but no interest was shown at the craft fairs. I think this idea first came to light in America where wedding trees are very popular. For me personally it would not be viable to make any of these as the people that come to my craft fairs would just...

    .........

It is truly a wonderful piece of work Brian but so fiddly, you must have the patience of a saint. Tell me, there must be times when you are working on your intarsia projects when things just don't go right, you mentioned bits flying across the workshop. Do you sometimes have to walk away from it...

    Tilted

Hi Alex. I am with Chris on this one. Having the table at an angle is an American thing and a few here in the UK have adopted the practice. Some find it easier to work with the sloping table but for me flat is best, as Chris said, it confuses the old grey matter and I see no advantage in it at all.
