    Advice please

Hi Everyone. We all know that as we get more and more into scrolling we need more equipment. I had a large bandsaw that I have just sold. I had it for cutting blanks for wood turning but all that had to go when I moved into a smaller workshop. For cutting up my wood to size and for several other...

    Mitre saw blade

I am picking up a Dewalt mitre saw on Monday. The standard blade that comes with it has 60 teeth and its a 12 inch blade. I was wondering if I should buy an additional blade with more teeth for a finer cut as I will cutting mainly 3/4 hardwoods on it. Also, what would be a good make of blade to...

    Making boxes.

Many thanks guys for all the advice. I never thought of using the router table to part the lids and it just so happened that I recently bought one so will give it a go.

    Making boxes.

I have a couple of questions concerning boxes. Its going into the unknown that prompts me to ask as I have never done anything like this before. I shall be making small boxes, like jewellery boxes. Some will be made with a dovetail jig and some using a half lap joint. I was wonding if it is okay...

    Woodworking with a disability

Thanks guys for all your advice and suggestions. I have been in touch with social services and they are coming out to see me. I feel it will take a while but will get there in the end.

    Woodworking with a disability

I know there are a few wood workers on here with a disability and was wondering if someone could give me the benefit of their experience. I live alone and although I manage quite well in my workshop I really struggle with things like housework. I am not sure if I am entitled to have a cleaner...

what was your first ever piece ??

Hi Mark. I liked your first piece, its a lot better than the first thing I made, which I think was a fish with no internal cuts. As you know I make many name signs every week, mainly orders from people that come to see me at the craft fairs. I think you have seen my face book page. I compose the...

    where is the wood

Hi. You will find that 1/4 inch hardwood will be very unstable, it will cup and warp despite keeping it flat. If you want wood that thin then use ply or MDF but be very careful with MDF and always use a mask and some form of dust extraction. As Mark said, I use 18mm hardwood for most of the...

    Bargain

Well done Bryan, a nice bargain and I expect you will go back for more when the need arises as I would at that price.

What's the finish like on your scroll saw table?

Hi Reggie. I once had to remove some rust from a scroll saw table and I used white spririt and wet and dry, it did the job. When I wiped off all the black gunge I noticed some unsightly marks and like yours some pitting here and there, these would make no difference what so ever to the cutting...

    Help required please

Me again Bryan. Had a thought. I buy my timber already planed and the prices I pay are the best I have come across. If you want the details I will PM them to you. Just off to the craft fair so back this evening.

    Help required please

Hi Bryan. If it comes to the crunch and you get no offers how about hiring a heavy duty belt sander from the local hire shop. That would certainly strip off any old varnish etc and then sand it smooth with an orbital sander.

    woodworking abroad...

A couple of years ago I went over to Ireland to fit a kitchen for some friends who had moved to Dublin. I had nearly finished it when I needed some bits and pieces to finish it off so went in search of the local B & Q. I stopped a local and asked if there was a B & Q in Dublin, he said no, but...

    Wood name puzzle

Hi Powertools. On my painted items I use acrylic paints from Hobbies, their own brand. The secret with using paints is to allow a full 24 hours between coats. If you are painting birch ply then 2 coats are enough for a professional finish. On my puzzles I add a coat or two of Hobbies varnish...

    Wood name puzzle

That will work as a one piece name sign but the letters need to be further apart, its to bunched up. If you want it as a jig saw then try having a bar below the name with the pieces interlocking onto the bar. Have a look at my facebook page, wooden crafts from Wales, and you will see what I mean.

    Wood name puzzle

I don't know of a specific app but what I do is to make the name in microsoft word using word art. If you bring up each letter individually you can get the letters touching by pressing the alt key and the directional arrows and then just draw in the connecting pieces. Maybe practice for a bit...

    Which scroll saw...

Almost all saws available in the UK now are Chiwanese and to be honest not very good. If you want a really good saw then don't even think about excalibur, they are as bad as the imported saws made from cheap materials but with a very hefty price tag. I you were to do some work on a cheapy saw...

    Good blades bad blades

Be careful buying off e-bay, there is a lot of rubbish on there. Hobbies sell their blades on e-bay and they are very good, cheaper as well if you buy from e-bay rather than their web site. I have used most makes of blades and now just use Flying Dutchman ultra reverse for all my work, no...

    Hegner stand, what's it worth?

I also have a disabilty and have to sit at the saw. I have the same sort of stool as Chris and cut for hours at a time. The ideal height is to have the table of the saw level with your elbows. I also have the Hegner foot switch and having adjusted the height of the stool everything is perfect.

    Bed

Martin. I bought the same Hegner as you just after Christmas but there was a problem with the table, where the split is for the blade one side was higher that the other, which meant lifting the wood over the lip when using the saw. I sorted the cast iron table out before Hegner picked it up with...
