    Cross cut saw

Hi Everyone. I would like some advice on a cross cut mitre saw. I have a friend who lives some 200 miles away and I went up last year and gave her a hand to sort her workshop out. I took lots of things for her including a cheap mitre saw I had but never really used but she is scared stiff of it...

joiner with a diploma not nvq

Hi Dez. I was a carpenter joiner for 30 years. I left a career in the Merchant Navy to get married and the two don't go together. I went to college and got a CoG in carpentry and joinery. I got a job straight away afterwards and although I worked for lots of different companies as a subbie I...

    bs 400 bandsaw

I get really anoyed with crap from the far east. I know we all try to buy the best but sometimes we just cannot afford what we would really like. I bought a belt/disc sander under the Charnwood logo although most importers sell the same machine. Within weeks the capacitor went. The Chinese just...

    Scroll saw blade life

As Gill once explained on here some time ago. A blade will basically last about 20 minutes. A lot depends on what make of blades you are using. I find that Flying Dutchman blades last the longest. I to make everything in hardwoods. I have a batch of Hobbies Niqua blades I am waiting to use up...

    Birch ply

If it is the right stuff, and I am sure it will be, then you will find a big difference to ordeinery plywood. It will be a joy to work with.

    Jigsaw surface coating?

Some time ago I made quite a few puzzles but not the type you are making. I have 2 copies of Patrick and Patricha Spielmans book, scroll saw puzzle patterns. Apparently it is the jig saw makers Bible. I no longer need these books so if you are interested in one send me a PM.

Home made scroll saw bench slope or not to slope?

I used a friends saw that was mounted on a sloping top and I just could not see any advantage. Both my saws are on flat surfaces and I think the majority of scrollers are the same as me. A tip for you when you make your bench. The ideal height is to have the table of the saw level with your...

    New to Scroll sawing

Hi Tom. Welcome to the site. You will get lots of good advice here. As Bryan said, blades are all the same length and if your machine can take pinless blades all the better as there is a vast choice. Flying Dutchman blades from Mikes workshop are just about the best, especially the ultra reverse...

    Axminster scroll saw... Hegner look-a-like

A lot of people like the AWFS 18 Hegner look-a-like but some people have had serious problems with them. They are no where as refined as a Hegner and you can easily cut your hands on the underside of the table. Steve had lots of problems with his and sent it back. Don't even think about getting...

    Eugene AKA boysie39

Eugene is a wonderful man and tallented scroller as well as a good all round wood worker. I have exchanged many e-mails with Eugene and we became good friends. I shall miss his post on here. When I first started to apply routing techniques to my scroll saw work Eugene very kindly sent me some...

    Vibrating plate exercise machine

I am thinking of buying a vibrating plate exercise machine purely to lose weight. I cannot do physical exercises due to a disability. I was wondering if anyone had one and if so was it effective.

New member needing advice on 1st scroll saw purchase!

I would not buy an excalibur. I had one and it lasted 3 months. The blade clamps are the worst design I have ever seen, you take pot luck where the blade is when you put it in the clamp, it dissapears in a dark void and you guess its in the right place. The tension lever will keep popping over...

New member needing advice on 1st scroll saw purchase!

There is some very sound advice here. Whatever you do, please do not buy the draper scroll saw or one like it. They are terrible to work with and it is so frustrating, some will not take pinless blades and the noise they make is awful. A second hand Hegner will beat all those other saws with...

    Scroll saw sanding 'blades'

Sanding blades are a big thing in America and it seems everyone uses them there. I tried one a couple of years back but could not get on with it. I have a belt/disc sander for big jobs. I also have a small random orbit sander for sanding the wood smooth after I have drilled the entry holes for...

    Scroll saw vibrating

I don't want to cause any arguements here. As it happens both my scroll saws are bolted to a really solid bench made from 4 x 2s. The top is also 4 x 2s and on top of that 2 layers of 18mm MDF. I can run both scroll saws at full speed with a glass of water on the tables and there is not a...

    Microsoft word 2008

I was wondering if I could still get microsoft word 2008 and if so where. The reason for this is that I have this installed on my mac along with the latest version but I want this for a friend who is 300 miles away and who has a windows PC. I use this program to design name signs and at the...

    Scroll saw vibrating

In your shoes I would have something like 2 pieces of 18mm MDF glued together as a bench or stand base and then place a cheap car rubber mat on top and bolt the saw to this, tight, and I think you will find vibration to be a thing of the past.

    Aims Review... Update..

I hate that. I paid £30 for an item thinking the company were based in the Uk but they were in Switzerland and I did not have a leg to stand on. They just go on coning people and laughing all the way to the bank. Itried to get my money back to no avail.

I wish I had one of those. I would take it to the craft fairs and give demos. I am sure it would attact a lot of attention and obviously increase sales.
