    Which blade?

Me again Finney. 200mm is a nice size. I thought I would mention that I do all my name signs in microsoft word as I can add a plinth for the name to stand on and I use word art as well so I just have the outline of each letter thus saving a lot on pronter ink. I to use cooper black for some of...

    Which blade?

You did not mention how big the name sign is going to be. I print the patterns for my name signs to fit an A4 in landscape mode so the sign usually ends up round about 11 inches long, obviously it depends on the number of letters. I have made 7 name signs today, all orders from the craft fair...

    Which saw

I have been thinking about the cost of the Hegner. I looked at the polycut 3 some months ago and it was about £1200. I looked at the Hegner site again yesterday and was shocked to see that the polycut 3 is almost £2000. I really cant see anyone paying that amount for a scroll saw. For that sort...

    Which saw

I endorse everything Martin has said. You are asking a lot and its just not feasable. Its either going to be a cheap saw or a Hegner, maybe a Delta if you can find one on flea bay. I cannot understand why you would want it to take pinned blades as it would be very difficult to do pierced work...

Going to build a wooden clock

I have seen the paradise clock, its quite large and very inticate. It will certainly be a challenge and will take a long time to complete and it will be very interesting to get updates from you on a regular basis as to how you are progressing. I look forward to seeing another post soon.

    Scrollers shop

I don't know if many of you are aware of it but Wilkinson's is a Mecca for scrollers. I have been there today and stocked up on 2inch masking tape, 2inch clear packing tape. Their own brand of stick glue and a load of bubble wrap and padded envelopes for sending my orders off. I also buy myb...

    Absolutely diabolical

I just had a phone call from a dear friend 200 miles away. She works for Tesco and yesterday she broke her index finger. I was shocked when she told me that Tesco tore her off a strip for having to take a few days off, she is in a lot of pain and they expect her to work. Last year she had to...

How to lift a Hegner scroll saw?

As Martin has said, never ever lift it by the top arm, which is the obvious place to lift it. You can put your right hand under the main frame where it meats the base and with the left hand life from under the base at the front being careful not to come into contact with the variable speed...

    Scrollsaw Sanders on Ebayl

I have given a lot of thought to these sanders and I cannot think of a single application where I would use it. Ican understand where they would be useful to a beginner who has wandered off the line on an internal cut but apart from that I fail to see their use. When I have made an item there...

    pew pew pew, laser printers!!

Reggie. I have been busy with craft fairs these last few days so have missed whats been going on here. I read your last post and if I can offer a little bit of advice it is this. When I started on the saw one of my biggest problems was cutting a straight line on the patterns. I would spend ages...

    pew pew pew, laser printers!!

I saw the video as well. I think it was just a time consuming idea that worked reasonably well, but why all that bother when you can just print the pattern off you want and stick it on the wood, been doing it for years and its quick and simple.

    Mikes workshop

It can easily be worked out how much an order with Mike will cost somply by typing in the search engine, dollars to pounds converter. The cost of p[ostage is about the same as what it would cost in the Uk. On average I wait about a week for blades to come but I order in advance and the wait is...

    Very hard, hard wood

Maple is notorious for being hard but then a lot of other hardwoods can be hard depending if they were kiln dried or air dried. I use maple a lot as it can have a really nice grain, what they call curly maple. As with all the hardwoods I use I cover the pattern with clear packing tape as this...

    First name puzzle

Nice to see Eugene on this thread. Lemon oil is in the same league as finishing oil, teal oil etc, nothing like Danish oil at all. Lemon oil will penetrate the wood and bring the grain alive. Its really nice as you can still small the lemon after several weeks. I use it quite a lot but then I...

fretwork cutting veering toward the right

As you have discovered its not as easy as it looks. It all depends on what your cutting and what type of blade you are using. I find flying dutchman ultra reverse blades are the best. Take heart though for after a ehile you will compensate the right amount automatically as you gain more experience.

No problem Richard. I hope it has all the information you need not only for now but for the future as well. It certainly covers ever aspect of jig saw making. Happy scrolling.

Bit of advice wanted for cutting internal letters

Its like all things really when we try them for the first time, it takes a bit of getting used to. I watched Sheila Langdry and she does it different to me by nibbling away at the corner to make the cut bigger before turning the blade and I could never do it her way as I felt it to time...

Bit of advice wanted for cutting internal letters

Hi Martin. Getting the corners nice and square on internal cuts is quite easy to achieve. With very small letters it is a little trickier but with a bit of practice is is quite straight forward. I will start at the beginning with drilling the workpiece. First of all decide what blades you are...
