    Wood advice please!

Hi Jim. The problem with thin wood is that it tends to warp and twist very easily. You stand a good chance of keeping it flat if it is well seasoned and the moisture content is quite low, about 10%. If you get the wood you are after keep it flat on the floor somewhere but not near a heat source...

    Hegner jig for piercing work

I had the same set up with my first Hegner way back in 1987. Therewere no quick clamps then and no front tension but even so and at the time I thought it was quite quick changing blades and also doing pierced work.

    HEGNER SAW

I take it you bought the saw second hand and this being the case you would not know how the previous owner used it, he may have been a bit heavy handed. it is unusual for one of the rollers to wear more than the other. My advice would be to get in touch with Hegner and replace both of them with...

    dewalt 20 inch scroll saw

I have a Dewalt 788 and they are really good machines, especially if you can get the MK1. There is no problem with repairs here in the UK, any Dewalt dealer will be able to sort any problems out as parts are readily available here. I had a new motor put on mine some months ago. Compared to a...

Laying a hardwood strip floor on concrete - advice needed

I have laid the same sort of flooring on fixed 2 x 1 battens and used tightbond glue and secret nailing and the flooring was random lengths of oak, it was laid in a very large room and when finished the house owner was over the moon.

    Hegner vs Excalibur

I would not get an excalibur. Save a bit more and go for the Hegner, the best saw available in the UK. I had an excalibur and it was thw worst saw I ever had and I was not alone, many were returned to Axy and when repaired they were flogged off on e-bay. The quality of materials used are very...

    Obeche

I tried obeche some months ago and if I could sum it up in one word it would be crap. First of all the colour is not very nice, its the same as someone who has just thrown up. It is quite a soft wood and very light, almost like balsa wood. Its a piece of cake to cut but if you use a router to...

    downloaded images?

I use a lot of imagaes from google images and sometimes I alter them slightly depending on what I am trying to achieve. I have never had a problem in all the years I have been doing craft fairs but one bright and cocky lad did say my disney name signs were a breach of copyright but again have...

    Metal detector

Many thanks guys and to Spindle. I am looking at the Fisher F4 detector and waiting for an e-mail from Joan Allen. Looking at the other items on the site they are very expensive, £150 for a set of headphones, £55 for a small rucksack and £25 for a small spade. I shall look around for prices from...

    Metal detector

I would like to get a metal detector, mainly for use on the local beaches. I have absolutely no idea what to go for. Its like taking up golf, you go into the shop and are confronted with hundreds of clubs, what ones do you choose. If anyone can give me some pointers I would be really grateful.

    What To Do?

There is no substitute for hands on experience. As you say, you can learn more watching someone than you can left to your own devices. I get a huge thrill when I show someone something they have struggled with and then get them to do it the same way. I had a lady from manchester come for a...

    suggestions for a new scroller

I think a scottoe dog is a good way of learning the basics. You can find one in google imaages. If you have never used a scroll saw before I would suggest you get some thinish scraps and draw some lines on them and then try to follow the lines. When you have progressed to the stage where you are...

    What To Do?

Hi Powertools. I would love an apprentice. I have people come to me from time to time as they want to learn the finer points. If you are approaching retirement I can think of nothing better than scrolling to pass away the hours. I have been scrolling for many years but 3 years ago had to give up...

    2 second delay

Many thanks guys. The one in the workshop is a bog standard radio/CD player whereas the one on the kitchen is a DAB radio/CD stero set up with seperate speakers. I tend to do all my wood finishing in the kitchen.

    What To Do?

Hi Gill. I started off like you and now I attend at least 2 craft fairs a week and I am doing very well. My problem is keeping up with demand and I work very long hours. I make over 100 different items in various hardwoods. I would suggest you have a look at my facebook page, Wooden crafts from...

    2 second delay

My little workshop is my spare bedroom in my bungalow, its about 15ft from the kitchen. In the workshop I have a radio going most of the time as I do in the kitchen but between the two there is a two second delay. When I walk into the kitchen I am hearing what has already been said in the...

    Tips wanted

Funny enough I also went to wilko's this morning and did exactly the same. I only went in for some bubble wrap and ended up buying four spotlights for my display, 2 extra storage boxes for stock, teak oil and a new broom.
