    Martinka & Devonwoody

Really nice, a good alround effort. I have been waiting with baited breath to see the finished items and they are outstanding in every way. Well done to all concerned.

    Update

I am a step nearer to taking a radical step in my scroll saw work. I mentioned last week about the 3 day event I attended and what I had learnt from a wood turner there. Basically what I am going to do is use epoxy resins to fill individual letters begginging with a new range of name signs. I...

    Newbie looking for advice

Absolutely. Last week I was at an event where the guy had a cheap scroll saw on a workmate bench and the vibration was awful. Once you get your saw firmly bolted down to a strong bench you will see a huge difference. Keep us posted on how things go with the move to the new house/workshop and if...

    Second hand saw thoughts

I am not familiar with this saw but as you say, it looks okay and with a bit of TLC it will come up nice. I would be a bit wary of using a sander on the table. I had a table like yours some years ago and I used white spirit and medium wire wool and it came up like new, it's hard work but it...

    Newbie looking for advice

Hi John. I often cut 1 inch thick oak and don't have a problem. Are you covering the oak with clear packaging tape, it makes a big difference. In your shoes I would try a number 7 flying Dutchman ultra-reverse blade, it's what I use on all my hardwoods. High speed and a good tension also help...

Any idea what wood this is

As it was used as a banister I would say it is almost certainly Brazilian mahogany and it looks as though it has aged quite a bit but still good for many things. I would suggest when you have made something from it you give a coat of teak oil or something similar which will bring the beauty of...

    White American Oak

You know how it is sometimes, you are talking to a friend and the subject of wood comes up in the conversation and he just hapenes to know someone who knows someone else who has some wood they are thinking of selling, after a week word finally reached the guy who had the wood, which turns out to...

    facebook

Hi Gill. I have had a facebook page for quite some time now and I have done reasonably well from it. I get a lot of enquiries about my work but when I tell them the price most have second thoughts. I'm not running a charity and my prices are very reasonable, so I have been told many times. The...

    Interesting 3 day event

I thought I would share this with my fellow scrollers out there. I have just finished a 3 day event at a National Trust Woodland Centre. All those invited had to be involved with wood in some way. On different days different people turned up. We had a husband and wife team displaying things they...

    Upgrading a tredle fretsaw!

It's one of the older ones. No front tension and I am sure the table is aluminium. What a good idea for the stand, never seen one like that before.

    ive finally made something

Well done on your first projects, you have certainly not gone for the easiest of things to make a start so all the more impressive. You need to slow down on tight turns to ensure you remain on the line of the pattern but not to slow or you will burn the wood. I tend to use full speed on most...

    Outrageous

Thanks for all the input guys, much appreciated. I never even thought about the AWFS18 from Axy. Thanks to Fineyb for the manual link. I found the bit I need and it will fit the Hegner. I have tried ringing the Axy number 03332 406406 but all I keep getting is a message saying the mailbox is...

    Outrageous

I was having a chat with Martin about a problem I have with my Hegner. The tension rod at the back has two steel wedges that fit into the arms. The wedges are now showing signs of wear and need to be replaced but I can't buy the wedges on their own, I have to buy the complete tension rod. The...

Axminster AWFS18 tension release lever problem

There is a wheel missing, no wonder it's a job to release the tension. Have a look in the box it came in. In my experience I am used to bits being adrift and more than once I have searched the box and found the missing bits, don't forget the packaging as well as something like the white wheel...

    Jet or Delta

In your shoes I would go for the Delta. It is a far better machine but sadly no longer available in the UK so I am not sure about spare parts should you need any. Having said that you can adapt other parts to fit, especially blade clamps. Several members here have Delta's so they could advise...

grain direction for scrolling a piece of sapele

Didn't realise you were going to cut them that thin. I use 18mm thick in the main. Be careful after you have cut the boards as they may well warp being that thin, it's what I have experienced several times in the past with thin stock.

    Headphone stand

A very good use of a material that can always be had for nothing. When I was a carpenter doing site work there would be loads of shuttering ply all over the place. Well done Martin. Your friend will be well pleased with the stand.

grain direction for scrolling a piece of sapele

From the picture it would appear the long grain is from left to right and the cross grain from top to bottom so if it was me I would cut it as it now stands, again, if it was me I would get 4 pieces from that lump. When the projects are completed you should get a really good finish on Sapele.

    Sapelle

Absolutely. I use it all the time. Beautiful wood to cut.
