Marmite - Love it or Hate it

Chris (waterhead) put me onto the king of combinations: Marmite AND peanut butter. I have it for breakfast most mornings unless I fancy a change, in which case I substitute bovril for marmite. Marmite and strawberry jam is also excellent. Cheers Tim

Tool warranties - are they really worth it?

This isn't really a gripe just a discuusion point really. I have numerous powertools that all have warranties, either standard 1 year or the ones that are automatically longer if you register like the three year ones offered by Metabo, Festool or Bosch. I have a Metabo Duo sander that is about...

    Aprons?

If I'm on site I wear one of these: which is useful enough and means that I don't end up catching the lower half when kneeling down. In the workshop I don't tend to wear one but just have a heap of old poloshirts and sweatshirts. Cheers Tim

Its that time of year again

Are you sure you are using the right Seconds and Co? The one in Powys still does (unless they stopped very, very recently). The correct link is: http://www.secondsandco.co.uk/Pages/company.php not http://www.seconds.co.uk/build_insulation.htm Cheers Tim

    American black walnut?

I think 25% wastage is pretty optimistic with sawn timber. I allow normally 50-100% depending on what timber is being used. I work on the principle that its better to have some left over for the next project, or to allow for a mistake or to be able to choose the best grain. Cheers Tim

Its that time of year again

Its a bit of plasterboard faced with bacofoil actually   In fact I'm pretty sure its not necessary to protect the wall but there is a plastic wiring conduit about 4 inches off the floor and its to protect that. I felt it yesterday and it was cold even though the burner was...

Its that time of year again

The other thing I forgot to mention is that its best to have as much flue exposed as possible inside the workshop since a huge amount of heat can be emitted by it. I also leave my air filter running on low to circulate the air and bring the hot air down. Even though I have the right sized one...

Its that time of year again

I use a Hotspot burner. I have it standnig on a concrete flag and nothing is kept within 3 feet of it. I do leave it running overnight in cold weather with all the vents shut down. As far as safety goes I think thats acceptable - no different to going to bed at night and leaving the...

    Best source for bird feeders

We have no squirrels because we have two labradors. I think I saw one once about 4 years ago... I ordered a bunch of feeders from these guys this morning: http://www.birdfood.co.uk/ They have a small cheap one for a couple of quid so I ordered 10 or so to stick in the trees. Cheers Tim

    Best source for bird feeders

We have a couple of bird feeders but SWMBO wants some more. We need the hanging ones because of rats and magpies (oh the joy of the countryside) and I was wondering if any of you are back garden twitchers etc and would know of a good supplier, preferably online. Cheers Tim

Cluster flies and how to get rid of them

Thats what we have! If you open the veluxes in the morning , its like something out of the film 'The Omen'. If I remember - I'll take a pic tomorrow. Cheers Tim

Cluster flies and how to get rid of them

If you are inundated with these annoying flies - slow moving black house fly sized flies that hang around in clusters  near windows and door frames then pay attention. You can't get rid of them permanently because they emit a pheromone that means next years hatchings will find your house...

Price and availability of birch ply

I was speaking to the sales manager at Eden's Corsham depot today. I needed 15 18mm 8x4 Birch Ply sheets and 5 10'x5' sheets plus a bunch of MR MDF. No long grain birch in stock and not likely to have any for two to three weeks. Cross grain available but not until the end of the week...

    Painting shelf support holes

I hadn't even thought about stain - I suppose it should make it quicker to apply, although I'm not sure how much by. I could use an artist's brush and dab them but its the sheer number of holes that is so time consuming. The paint is waterbased Thanks T
