    Chisel buying advice

As johnnyb mentioned I have a set of the blue handle Marples, purchased for not much on eBay the 1" and 3/4 chisel edge roll when morticing in softwoods for a period. I purchased them as they were highly regarded by folk, my experience differs. This is the risk when buying vintage/ second-hand...

Shall I continue lapping this sole ?

Update. I'm just continuing to use the plane. I tried spot removal it worked but was taking a lot longer than planned. I've sent a message to Ray Iles and hopefully I'll just send it off. Thank you all for your help so far.

Shall I continue lapping this sole ?

Thank you for the replies. I'm not confident draw filing however I watched your video David and it was very informative (unedited is great because it gave a great representation of how long these things take). I'll definitely try spot removal with coarse paper. Thank you.

Shall I continue lapping this sole ?

Hello, Picked up this plane and its in really good nick bar the sole. It was hit and miss getting a shaving to start thinly and in the middle however placing the plane on the edges of the board I was able to do this. (Lateral adjust made no difference, blade is also sharp with an ever so slight...

How do I lubricate and clean Diamond Sharpening Stones?

Hello, I may be incorrect here so please wait till someone with more experience replies however I was under the impression that cast iron plane bodies are too soft to use with diamond plates and will gum up the surface. In regards to cleaning and lubricant I used water as a lubricant and would...

    Critique my first project.

Thank you all for the replies. I'll make sure to post a picture of the joints once they have been planed and sanded. I'm going to make some slivers and fill the gaps. Definitely going to use this thread as reference the next time I cut them. ( Which I will post.)

    Critique my first project.

One thing I'm learning now from your feedback is not to worry too much if I go of the angle. After sawing I tried to pare back to the line on the tails which inevitably gave me a more uneven surface than a sawn surface. Making transfering to the pins more difficult.

Yes John, all marked out together. Will definitely make some slivers before glue up. Hope you're well.

    Critique my first project.

It's an older dovetail saw, 17ppi. I'm not sure if the plate is thicker than its modern equivalents as I don't have one to compare. I'm sure it's probably user inexperience.

    Critique my first project.

Hello all, I've just finished my first dovetails. Just a simple box it was made with the intention of learning how prepare and dimension all my pieces by hand and practice my sawing. Wood is redwood pine which was PAR but cupped and twisted which I tried to rectify by hand. I'm after...

Chisel gets dull whilst working up through the grits

I'm also a beginner and one invaluable piece of advice I learnt is keeping going till you feel a burr edge to edge. I used to see a shiny secondary bevel and assume that's me done but once I started to feel for the burr. I noticed I didn't need to go to the much higher grits as the edge was...

    Troubleshooting plane.

Well I'm getting thinner shavings but nothing like the ones I got last night. Planing at 30 degrees to the board helps a lot.

    Troubleshooting plane.

Success. I followed up with quick 240 grit on the sole across the float glass. Ditched the diamond stones and used 800 then 1200 wet and dry on the glass and used Mr Charlesworths ruler trick on the back. Ditched the pine board and picked up some Sapele which I've been saving for my first...

    Troubleshooting plane.

I'm going to see if I can refine the edge even more so tonight and see if I can get hold of some different timber and report back.

    Troubleshooting plane.

I'm using a large piece of float glass larger than the no 4 and attached the sandpaper with some low tack spray adhesive.

    Troubleshooting plane.

Thanks for the reply Richard, I'm using an older original eclipse guide, I believe it was 2 inch projection for 25 and 1¹/² for 30, I may be incorrect as I don't have it in front of me.

    Troubleshooting plane.

Definitely will try that Chris and thanks for the words of encouragement, I'm aware that is probably my fault and its just a learning curve just got to figure it out.

    Troubleshooting plane.

Thank you for your in-depth reply Tom. I will have a look at my iron again. Just to make clear I'm not actually doing a job as a beginner I've started with sharpening and maintenance first before I start with any kind of project so the wood I'm planing is a 4 inch wide softwood board from b&q...

    Troubleshooting plane.

Hello. Yes this was the first time I started to lap the sole, I started the process with everything under tension just the iron retracted. I did continue to lap untill most of the grid has gone bar a hollow in the middle of the plane. Thank you for all the replies so far, I tested the...
