    Veritas marking gauge...

Not necessarily. What I noticed on my Japanese gauge is the although the blade is wide (around 10mm) it's not parallel to the stock...there's a bit of 'toe in' by around 10deg which I thought was odd at first but later realised that it's there to keep the gauge tracking correctly as it's pulled...

I wonder what the Post Code is?

    Another Mac query?

I've just tried that and when I highlight a jpeg in 'Finder' and try and compress it, the 'Compress' option on the File drop down menu is greyed-out, so I can't do it :( I'm using 10.7.3 on the IMac and there's also no right-click option on the mouse, just a 'click' function wherever it's...

    Hell's teeth...not ANOTHER box!

Been there with the feet thing on a box Pete. Remember the RI box from last year with the brass feet?...'slam dunked' I was (and rightly so) over that so on this one I've left them off - Rob

    Another Mac query?

Puzzled I am, over a very simple little thing...attaching files to emails. Easily done I know but I've got a slight problem and it's probably something to do with the way I've saved stuff. So the routine is to open a new mail message, click the 'paper clip' and attach Word/Excel docs in the...

    Hell's teeth...not ANOTHER box!

The ebony was 'acquired' :-" in a different life Mark and is almost all gone, but each time I go to Yandles I usually pick up a length of Indian Ebony for around a fiver or so which I use for this sort of accent detail. The box was sawn on the bandsaw through the double width centre pin which...

    Happy Days - MOT passed!

We had a SWB 90 Defender a couple of years ago, with the 5 cylinder turbo BMW engine, leather seats, air con...very gucci for a Landy. We had three excellent camping holidays to Switzerland and the South of France and the Landy was great...in fact we pulled into a campsite near Interlaken and...

    Lino As A Desk Covering

There's an excellent article in the current issue of F&C where the ed, Derek Jones is restoring classic 30's tea trolly and uses lino (sourced through Forbo) as a surface replacement for the original. He also goes into some detail on the best ways of using the stuff...highly recommended as a...

    Hell's teeth...not ANOTHER box!

The top is just located into the rebate and floats with around .5mm each side for shrinkage...there's a small dab of glue in the centre just to hold it in place. No catch on the lid as it just fits snuggly over the lining. The inside leading edge of the lid has been very slightly chamfered...

    Hell's teeth...not ANOTHER box!

It's my baby brother's 50th coming up at the end of June so there's going to be a fairly big Bash round at his place. This is a little something from me to commemorate the momentous occasion. It's a fairly straight forward box in oak: ...through dovetailed at the corners, with a solid...

    uneven surface planer / thicknesser

If you take F&C, there's a really excellent article in the latest edition by Alan Holtham on setting up p/t's....read it today having brekki and it's very good, that issue is covered - Rob

    #4 1/2 Smoother - LN vs Clifton...

They obviously pay teachers far too much these days! ...didn't happen when I was at the 'chalkface' (or should that be whiteboard face now?)...I had to rough it with me Norris panel plane    - Rob

Beech and Walnut Jewellery box WIP

Time wise, yes, the process is a bit more protracted as you've got to apply lippings, plane them down flush and then veneer over the top. If the particular board you want to use has got an 'ole going all the way through, then I can't see any way that you could use that feature by veneering...as...

Axminster - doing a disservice to woodwork

Chris, totally agree. I know what I'd do...email Ian Styles personally. He's a good bloke and takes this sort of thing very seriously, so that if a highly respected professional maker such as yourself makes a complaint, I'm pretty sure that something would get done about it. The other thing...

Beech and Walnut Jewellery box WIP

I was going to suggest that Mark, as an alternative to making it up in the solid, depends whether or not U has a bs to do the job...I would have thought something with a 150mm doc and a decent blade ought to do it...for sure, making doors in the solid with that beech seems fraught to me - Rob

Beech and Walnut Jewellery box WIP

The problem is U, is that not only do you have to get yourself organised...you have to get the wood organised as well :P Agreed that you have to try these things (and if it works then 'whoohoo!..rockn'roll' but if it doesn't, you'll have put in a lot of time and effort for something that's not...
