    Axe being forged

On a slightly different, but related topic, I thought this might be of interest...forging a samurai blade :) I paid a visit to one of the last remaining professional swordsmiths in Japan who was working in the Fukushima prefecture and no, there were no signs of any devastation anywhere. We...

Sanjusangen-do Temple and 1000 carved Kannon

Didn't go to that one Rog, but as there are gazillions of the things in Kyoto and they'll all fabulous, it's no surprise we missed that one...definitely on the next trip. What we did see (or rather hear) was the Nightingale Floor at Nijo Castle which was incredible...it's impossible to walk on...

Sanjusangen-do Temple and 1000 carved Kannon

In fact most of the wooden structures, including the everyday houses are fascinating to look at, particularly in the older Geisha parts of the cities. All the temples and shrines we visited were wooden but many had been continually rebuilt owing to earthquakes and fire. One of the most...

    4 - 4 1/2 , 5 - 5 1/2 why ?

...that must be to do with the heat generated on the sole when PaulC is planing. It's a miracle that the Clifi soles don't go banana shaped with all the heat produced!  - Rob

Sanjusangen-do Temple and 1000 carved Kannon

Then our guide told us a fib Rog :( I have the same shot as you of the roof timbers at the top...didn't post it though - Rob

    Another one for Jonzjob

As I recollect, my dad flew out to Singapore in the 60's a few times in Britannia's and hated the things. Could be wrong though as I was in my teens then and not really paying attention to this sort of stuff, but at the time he used to belong to a RN FAA unit called MARTSU which was basically a...

    Another one for Jonzjob

As a matter of interest JZ, are there any still flying? Having seen the fly past over Buck House today (on the telly I hasten to add) I would have thought that the RAF would give their collective back teeth to get hold of one in flyable condition - Rob

Sanjusangen-do Temple and 1000 carved Kannon

...and this is my one, Matsumoto castle. It's the only original, preserved wooden castle in Japan (all the others are fero-concrete) and is five stories high The stairs inside are incredibly steep and go up: ...at an angle of around 60deg, with the rise on each step being about 50cm...

Noob advice about cupping, please . . .

Another alternative is to produce your own laminated pine boards, which are quarter sawn...but it is a bit of a faff. Take your cupped slash sawn boards and glue them together to form solid block, say 100mm thick and use lots of cramps to pull them up. Then prep two adjacent edges to form a...

    Myths & Mysteries

I haven't read these particular words of wisdom and have no intention of doing so, but if this is what's being advocated in the blog, then it's even more reason not to. If a mortise is being chopped, the job should be on top of the bench and even then cramped to the most solid part, which is...

    Computer help needed

+1...not sure about Alfa's though and SWIMBO's the only one I've had for the last 30 odd years. Also substitute Naim for Quad - Rob

    Good woody visit - Salisbury

Going to have to put that one on my 'to do' list. As usual, when you live in a place, this sort of stuff gets a fairly low priority. I also have Wilton house about half a mile away and haven't been round that yet :( - Rob

    Lengthening Timber

That's an excellent, if spendy choice for a marine application where the timber is immersed constantly as in boats. Try Everbuild D4 which is also waterproof and ought to be available for around £5 a litre...I pay a little less that that. Good stuff  - Rob

    My Square Edge Revolution

My shooting board lives more or less within constant reach of the bench and I certainly wouldn't be without it. The No9 is an excellent choice for a shooter but the extra mass of the LN51 and the skewed blade makes it a better choice (if the caveat of £sd is disregarded) - Rob

Phew - Deadline met! now I can take it a bit easier!

Whatever caused that Rog, it was a warning sign and shouldn't be disregarded...ignore it at your peril. Nice chairs, but they still look bl%@dy uncomfortable. Still, customer's always right, most of the time  - Rob

You know you are a woodworker when............

...then SWIMBO has instantly turned into a genius woodworker! She used to cut home brewed bread with a conventional serrated bread knife and could only produce thick, skewed doorsteps. I let her try with one of my new Jap knives and she can now cut perfectly even, thin slices. She looked at...

Charnwood w619 - are there any reviews yet?

The problem is that bandsaw blades wear out mighty quickly with prolonged use...a decent TCT saw blade on a tablesaur will last a lot longer with the same amount of usage. In an ideal world of course, you actually need both machines - Rob
