    Where Am I?

Cool picture Dave, I'd swear it's on the way up the Mennock Pass, twixt Sanquar and Wanlockhead, looking south, perhaps, from White Dod. If I'm right, the Tour of Britain rode over there on Saturday. Cheers, Dod

    Sewing stand help?

Thanks Dave, That was pretty speedy, I'll have a look at the tutorials you recommended. I managed to get copies of the leg placed around the column by some kind of copying/moving tool and reference to the bottom of the "piece of string". Perhaps that was the rotate tool. Regardless, I was...

    first go at carving

That's an excellent piece. It looks like quite a lot of work to carve it, was the piece difficult to hold? It looks like it would be quite tricky to make the hollows as even as you have got them, did you do a lot of marking out before hand or just go by eye? I think that a bit of carving can...

    Have your say

Hi Philip, I don't really see woodturning alone as an artform, although once combined with other artistic "disciplines" I'm sure that they do tend towards art. Stuff that has been made or produced solely on a lathe probably tends mostly towards the craft side of things, whereas items which...

    Sewing stand help?

Hi Folks, I'm pondering building a vaguely shaker sewing stand, like a little three legged table with a drawer under the top (the top being held in place by a yoke which also supports the drawer). Wise to the idea that I might be able to consider a variety of subtly different designs by using...

    Is Isopropyl alcohol acid free?

Calv, Sometimes a pH value (or perhaps a range) is quoted in either the specification or the safety data sheet if you can obtain one from the suppliers (they ought to be able to provide you with at least a safety data sheet for IPA). That doesn't necessarially mean that it will actually...

    woodworm again question

Hi DW, Sorry I can't help you on a beetle ID :( , but I too have only ever seen worm holes in sapwood. I love the way they look when you plane through them and the lines they leave on waney edges  As I understand it they dont use/eat dry timber, so if your stock is dry there shouldn't...

    New lathe advice

I don't know if you have tried looking for anything second hand, but you might get a better machine if you do (although sorting transport can often be an issue). Cheers, Dod

    Making Shavings.....!!!

Hi Paul, (either one?) Clearly it's time for a bit of a muppet question, but did you drill the hole (to take the screwdriver bit holder) before putting the wood on the lathe, or hold it in a chuck and drill it. Guess who finally managed to get hold of a screwdriver bit holder today :shock...

Advice on some fresh wood I have

For the holly I'd be inclined to cut it up as best you can (split all logs down the middle at least) and put it aside to dry. You might have a fair bit of wastage through cracking and splitting by the time it's dry enought to turn, but you won't have invested too much effort in making firewood...

    Philip Hearsey style desk

Hi Phil, I obviously hadn't realised you were going to use inlay. I thought you'd be putting "whole" pieces of timber in, which I suppose would be self compensating for orientation of the holes in both faces. Using inlay will probably mean that you needn't worry about wood movement, will use...

    Philip Hearsey style desk

This looks good, but I can help wondering how you're going to make sure that it doesn't fall over. Presumably you'll just give it soem very grippy feet on the bottom piece? If I was tackling the top I think I'd have made up the end jointed pieces (with the inlay fitted) before jointing to the...

    Timber supplies

Mike, I've used Lanarkshire Hardwoods (near Carnwath) quite a few times and found them to be very good. Not the biggest selection in the world, but all local wood and well dried. Cheers, Dod

more of my work for critique-comments etc

They're all nice, and actually I quite like the plaques (although can't help thinking that starting with a planed piece of timber might be better for untouched parts of the face). How big are these? Thanks for showing. Dod

Westonbirt - Who's Going And When?

I think most likely Saturday, although it's hard to tell with it being so local for me. Probably with some of the same likely lads as that other one down south a while back. I'll look forward to seeing you, I trust you've booked plenty of rain.... Cheers, Dod

Sjoberg Workbench - good deal or not?

Ratter, I made a bench for less than £200 including a drawer cabinet, vices etc. after having carefully reviewed the specs of the Sjobergs and some other commercially available benches. The top of mine is all hardwood, and is pretty heavy, although the base is softwood. I reckoned that I'd...

    Why buy when it's free.

Have you had any issues with salt coming out of the driftwood? I picked up a piece on the beach near Ayr a few weeks back and have been leavuing it in the rain (plenty of that lately) to try to wash some of the salt out although I've no idea if it will work. Cheers, Dod
