    stopping racking?

Paul, I would go for a fairly stiff wood and relatively large sections if I were to try such a thing myself, I think. That could lead to it being a bit heavy though. Another option, which may not really be what you are after, might be to use reinforcements, perhaps at the corners or...

Effect of Cold on PVA Glue

Andy, I also use the same glue (as you) for pretty much everything, although I love epoxy for non-wood stuff. If it works why fix it? Mind you the only finish I ever use is Danish Oil. Dod

    Dining Table Footprint?

WiZeR, I have a section in a book that covers this, and well, to be honest it says just the same as Steve Maskery pretty much. He (Peter Tischler) recommends 36" min width, 24" min place setting and a 16" min overhang at the ends, which I'm sure is to within a fraction of a side plate of whats...

    Denatured Alcohol or Methalated Spirits.

Methanol is classified as Toxic, ethanol is classified as harmfull, both of them carry this classification for swallowing, inhalation and contact with the skin. Basically what this means is that methanol is a rather more poisonous than ethanol. Methanol should evaporate off more readily as it...

    Half lapped joints

I've regularly used the method that Andy suggests, and all I can say is that even I find it easy :D I'm sure that there are quicker methods, but that one is certainly simple (although I've never done it for such a large batch of joints). Cheers, Dod

    Which first lathe?

Thanks for the advice one and all :D There is a Union Graduate on E-bay at the moment, but its a bit out of my price range. I'm looking at swivel head lathes, because this seemed to be a good idea in terms of the possibilities for bowl turning in the future. Presumably this is generally...

    Which first lathe?

Horst, Thanks for your thoughts. On a related note, if anybody knows of anyone who might be able to provide a days turning tuition in or around SW Scotland please let me know (If I can do it in the next month of so I might even be able to get work to contribute - and I'm an ecotoxicologist...

    Which first lathe?

Hello Folks, I'm considering getting a lathe in the near future, but not too sure what to go for. It will just be for light hobby use, and to be honest I've no idea what I want to turn but it seems like quite a nice way to use up scraps of wood and I rather liked the idea that some things...

    Clamp Guides - how useful??

I've got a 3 foot one from Axminster, which I've found quite handy, but as has been said before you need to know the offset, it needs to be square and I've found that tightening the clamp can cause it to shift a little. Still a great buy at around a 10er I think. Dod

    design anomalies

But if somebody is paying for it the time/efficiency of construction becomes much more important. Those last few details might add appreciably to the cost, although I suppose that it is these same details that might make the distinction between the ordinary and the remarkable. Dod

    planer thickness question

Neil, I believe that I have the same P/T as you (mine is a 10 inch surface planer, but only a 6 inch thicknesser is this usual?). Mine usually pulls the timber through OK (and also for the rubber out feed roller). Recently I had trouble which appeared to be due to "stickyness" on the...

    Modern Furniture Book

I believe that I've got both of the books that ALF mentioned, and as was rightly pointed out, they are really more project based so contain a relatively limited amount of material for inspiration. That said, I thought that the sofa that I believe is on the cover of "In the Modern Style" was...

    Fence (garden) design considerations

Andy, I've seen a fence that has posts concreted in with the rails tenoned into the posts. After much pondering I concludd that the rails had been installed at the same time as the posts (the rails were simply holding up fence panels). So it can be done, although it sounds like hard work to...

    Blum Hinges

Jason, Thanks for posting the pics. When I've done this before it's been without jigs. The door holes were drilled on a drill press and the hinges attached to the cabinets by holding the doors in place with a small spacer whilst fixing. It certainly works, but I suspect only really due to...

    Blum Hinges

Jason - presumably this one is for the hole in the door? Orange - and yours is for the screw holes in the cabinet? Or am I missing something? Cheers, Dod
