Which plane is the one to go for

I got myself a Stanley 92 a while back and I've found it to be pretty handy. I'm sure you'll find it to be a useful investment. Dod

    SOME NEW ITEM'S

Jonathan, I particularly like the first chair, it looks great, and I also rather like the back/arm interface of the second one (although I expect that it takes a fair bit of fiddling to fit). Do your experiments with curved legs start off more vertical at the seat and become more horizontal as...

    SOME NEW ITEM'S

Taffy, These "time warp" things seem to crop up everywhere, although I have a theory that the time an object remains in the time warp for is inversely related to its size. Fortunately this means that you are fairly unlikely to lose your whole workshop for very long at all, but something as...

    Ash for Chopping boards

I have read somewhere, not sure where, that sycamore is less likely to taint food than many other woods, but as to whether or not you could actually tell the difference in tainting I have no idea. Cheers, Dod

    Kitchen Table

Rod, I used Tung oil on a sycamore kitchen table, about 4 or 5 coats. It seems to be holding up pretty well so far (6 months use). It will need to be reoiled periodically though, and the oil did darken (yellowish) the wood a bit, which the waterbased finishes suggested by Waterhead may not...

    Glue open time.

Gary, In similar situations I have used waterproof glue which seems to have a longer open (and drying) time than the non-waterproof equivalents (at least in the kind of glue I normally buy). Not sure if the differenc would be enough to buy you sufficient time though. Cheers, Dod

    Grain Direction

Making all of the faces out of a single panel would give continuity of the grain right the way through the piece, but might only work if the drawers have false fronts. If you're having proper drawers that wouldn't work, so I'd be tempted to go for horizontal grain throughout, or do something...

    Which Table Saw to buy?

Ben, I'll just second what Jon said about the Electra saw, I've had mine for a few years and found it to be very good (reliable and accurate). Cheers, Dod

    Workbench in progress

Craig, I too am about to embark on a bench making adventure, and plan to make just the front of the top from hardwood. I expect that this bit will see the most abuse. I plan to include a tail vice and dog holes, which would be in the hardwood. I think that a tail vice of some kind might be a...

    Workbenches

Thanks for the replies folks, I'm getting slightly less concerned about the potential problems of a woden vice mechanism. Philly, thanks for the wagon vice tip. Right now thats looking like the solution I am after. There might even be the chance of a couple of boards of beech from my usual...

    Workbenches

Hello All, I've been thinking for quite some time about building a workbench, and feel that now is probably the time to do it. No doubt spurred on somewhat by Lord Nibbo's fine, fine construction recently. So here I am to try to clarify a few thoughts that I've had and hear what suggestions...

    Candlesticks

Thanks Folks, I'll try to get some of the little metal inserts. Nearly ordered some from Craft Supplies just now, but they seem to have the most user unfriendly website I've ever come across. :( Cheers, Dod

    Candlesticks

I'm thinking of making a candlestick or two. I'm not sure how big the hole in the top for the candle should be (not being much of a candle user). I'm currently thinking along the lines of about 20 to 25 mm. Do you think that this would do the trick? Cheers, Dod

    Is it Art or Craft

Russel, I think that there is a lot that goes way beyond wood turning in your pieces. In my opinion it is art that uses wood turning as an element (I'm sure you didn't turn the crown of thorns thing). Excellent stuff. Cheers, Dod

    Tool sharpening

Here, here for the doing your own sharpening. I'm just starting to learn but it really does help. I suppose that the sharpening comes along with the turning and certainly sometimes I find myself resharpening quite regularly (several times in even quite a short session). I have far better...

    New Bench

Fandabiedozie bench :D The ply back took me a bit by surprise, but even if you don't put anything in it people still won't be able to shift it to see. It really is amazing to see the quality of workmanship that has gone into this (planning on making myself a cheap pine monstrosity soon :oops...

    Wooden pens

RPM, Have you taken the drive centre, or chuck, off the lathe? Do you not have a slightly tapered "tube" behind it (which the drive cebtre seats in)? If so, then this is probably the morse taper. As a last resort it might be worth a look at the instruction book if you have one :shock...

WIP - Bedside Tables - My Second Furniture Project.

I'd be inclined to use the tops with tables, rather than cabinets, but it's very much a personal choice and would depend on other furniture in the room as well. I've finished everything I've done so far in oils, and whilst they can take some time to dry I don't think I've had any problems with...

Bench size for wood turning lathe

Rob, I recently made a bench for a Record DML, I made the top and a lower shelf a bit like torsion boxes (around 5 inches thick) and filled the voids with sand. This seems to be working well, although if you've already got a big bit of timber it would seem sensible to use it. Cheers, Dod
