    Boron wood preserver?

Inventor, I think that I can answer your original question about boron/borate wood preservers. My understanding is that due to their high water solubility (and a general tendency to be highly mobile in situations where water is present) they are not recommended for use in either external or...

    planing largish flat panels

Engineer One, Having just made a small stool out of some lime I would just add that despite it being a hard wood, it is rather a soft one (kind of the opposite of yew :?: ). I found it to be just like a really nice bit of pine with no knots in it, easy to work, if a little characterless...

    timber size

tender foot, I recently managed to post my first image following some absolutely luddite-proof instructions (well I managed didn't I :D ) posted by ALF. Have a look here and follow ALF's method. Cheers, Dod

    Boron wood preserver?

OK, rather off topic (and maybe also a bit of a daft question  ), but what on earth would cause more recently grown trees to grow so much more quickly and why would this make them more resistant to decay? Cheers, Dod

    log advise please

Mrs S, I tend to attack the face of a split log with an electric planer just to flatten it a bit, it's a bit brutal but it seems to work OK. Cheers, Dod

    Dod's Workbench

Philly, The top is mostly beech, a few bits were starting to get a bit spalted, and I only had 4 boards so supplemented it with a board of sycamore I had lying around which made the sides for the tray at the back. The end caps are birch. The legs are cheap 2x4 and the box for the drawers is...

    Dod's Workbench

Thought I'd have a go at posting a picture, and decided that today would be a good time to show a picture of my workbench. [/img] It's in good working order, although there are still a few wee bits and pieces to finish off. It's made out of wood and has vices (don't we all :D ), if you'd like...

    De-rusting

Iron oxides (i.e. rust) are an important component of soil, and contribute considerably to its brown colour. That said, It's probably best not put directly on plants.

    new lathe

Johnluc, I have used a Jet lathe, although I have no idea which model it was. I've had 3 days on them whilst at training courses at Just Wood in Ayr. The lathes have sufficient capacity to turn a 14 inch bowl over the bed. My previous experiences are of a Record DML lathe, and the difference...

    Website

My general feeling, when considering indoor furniture made from hardwoods, that the main choice to be made is one of aesthetics. I expect that most things could be made from most woods, some might be a little easier than others or better than other for a few specific aspects. Obviously, if...

    Timber Dryers

Scrit, Thanks very much for posting those links, it looks like a good read. I do wonder about their opening phrase and whether ir might apply to here as well, but somehow I doubt it :D Cheers, Dod

    Steve Maskerry - Woodworking DVD

Having read a bunch of Steve's great furniture and mind boggling jigs in articles in GW I'll be looking forward to these as and when they arrive. Obviously, as with the stuff in the magazines I expect that I'll think "Wow, that's great stuff" then proceed to not do anything for a very long...

    Laburnum toxicity

Terry Porter, Wood Identification and Use (2004) This book notes that the seeds are highly toxic to humans and animals, but makes no other comment. My advice is not to eat the seeds, although you probably won't want to eat the timber either. Cheers, Dod

    Sharpening survey

Free hand on a grinder most of the time, I have a Sorby fingernail jig but just couldn't get on with it. Now that I have sorted out doing it freehand I find that it is not only quicker, but also more flexible should I wish to slightly alter the grind along the way. Dod

    Home made spalting?

I just left a largeish log of sycamore out in the garden for a year. I haven't turned any of it yet but it looks like it could have done with rather longer to have any real effect. Cheers, Dod
