    Dado Safety Guard Shocker

Incidentally (probably not obvious from what I've said previously) - the cutters are designed such that the teeth of each blade overlap each other, but are offset at right angles so that they don't interfere with each other. Indexing pins in the blades ensure that the set-up is correct. Martin.

    Dado Safety Guard Shocker

DemiFrog, Yep, I did buy it but haven't had gotten around to using it yet . It was one of those wonderful impulse buys (which was given a helping hand by the £99 pound offer NMA had on at the time). I'm in the middle of yet another workshop re-organisation at the moment, but hopefully...

    Which Table Saw PLEASE HELP!

Lee, I wouldn't necessarily discount the Scheppach for this reason alone - one the reasons I bought the TS2500 was because of its space saving features (I'm also working in a small workshop). For example, the sliding rail + table can be put in a corner somewhere when you don't need it, and you...

    Dado Safety Guard Shocker

I believe it's more to do with the EU directive concerning braking of the blade within 10secs. A dadoo blade is heavy (at least three blades in one if you will) whereas a wobble blade is much lighter. It's just not considered safe to brake a heavy dado blade in this way, hence the rules...

    Which Table Saw PLEASE HELP!

Mine (Scheppach) also runs off a 13A supply OK, although it does have a tendency to blow the plug fuse on a regular basis. And if I start the extractor before the TS the fuse seems to blow every time.

Accurate Mortice & Tenon Joints for floor standing lamp?

Ray, Many thanks - ironically this was the method I ended up using (having read about it in a woodturning magazine), but I forgot to post back the final answer... Martin.

    Kitchen Lights

Agreed - sorry Alf. I'll keep it short. Andrew - my main point is that regulations such as part P are needed (I agree that it's flawed in many areas, but then so is most legislation initially). It's always surprised me the amount of leeway afforded under the DIY banner. If my house burned...

    Kitchen Lights

I'm sorry, but all this belly-aching about the new part-P regs really does seem rather over the top. I think you're over-simplifying the issue - building inspectors are rarely 20yr old graduates who've had a 3 day training course. They're more likely to be 40+ qualified engineers who "know a...

    What annoys you about Norm?

Here's my top Norm annoyances... (1) His big workshop. Bigger than my bl**dy house! (but I confess, this is pure jealousy) (2) His propensity to use his lathe duplicator too much - you know, the thing that does it almost automatically by following a hardboard template (although that seems to...

A small step for man, a giant leap for mankind

The company I work for wrote some of the on-board software for the probe - so you might regard me as being rather biased (which I am ), but I think there's lots of ancillary benefit to space exploration that people tend to forget when they see $3.2bn dollar headlines like this. Apart...

    NEW to wood turning

I very much second Hans' recommendation for Keith Rowley's book. For turning tools, make sure you buy HSS rather than carbon steel (which whilst slightly cheaper, will blunt more quickly, and it's easier to "blue" cutting edges with carbon when you grind them). I started out with a set from...

    H&L HAVE LISTENED TO US!!!

IMO, don't buy Sky+ unless you really want to record off one Sky channel and watch a different one (that's what you'll pay the £10 a month for). Instead, buy a personal video recorder (i.e. HD + DVD Recorder combo). We just bought the Pioneer 520HS for Crimbo and it's really great. £370...

    RECORD POWER TSPP250

piggy, I bought a TS2500 a few months ago, and whilst I agree with Fred that it's more "top-end hobby" than "low-end-industrial", I can confirm a few points that Fred has raised... * The internals are all mounted to the CI table itself, with the table being bolted to the body. The only part...

    Axminster M950

I had a closer look this weekend, and there's not much difference between the rest that comes with the Sorby Universal and the Axminster one. The Axminster comes with a slot + adjustable mitre guage that runs at right angles to the rotation of the wheel (which the sorby doesn't). That could I...

    Axminster M950

Tony, I ended up buying the Sorby universal system (i.e. the mount + jig for finger profiles) - basically because it allows you to more easily switch between finger-nail mode and normal sharpening mode. Apart from that, I don't think there's a significant difference between the two rests. The...

    Axminster M950

I also started off with the Axminster toolrest, and it works well for most of the tools, but I still found it difficult to sharpen finger-nail profiles accurately. I therefore invested in the roberty sorby jig as well, which is excellent - see http://www.robert-sorby.co.uk/sharpening-sys.htm...

    What job do you do?

I'm a software engineer, working in the Space (i.e. satellites, ground control segments, satcoms etc.) and Defence areas. Mostly working in the UK, but in the past have travelled abit, primarily in Europe in support of space work. My most exotic work location was a 6 week stint in French Giana...

    Axminster M950

Morris, Do you have a grinder? Absolutely essential if you're to keep your gouges nice and sharp. I'd also think about buying (or making) a jig to sharpen your gouges. Sharpening a finger-nail profile by hand is tricky and I personally prefer to spend time turning rather than fettling the...
