An exchange of christmas gift ideas...What to make?

Saw this on Facepants the other day (apparently the creators are inundated with orders at 30 odd dollars a pop!), like the simple idea, but wondering if it could be 'smartened up' a bit, i.e. not shabby chic?

    Advice please

Hello and welcome. If you're making the cabinet for the joy of making something that will hopefully last for years, Birch ply would be favourite, but its not cheap. Your local builders merchant will probably keep some low to medium quality ply in stock which would structurally be fine for what...

    Newbie Desk Design

All the weight, little as it may be, from elbows, laptops, books, junk etc will probably be in the centre of the spans and at the front edge. Could be ok, but over time I'd expect it to sag a little, but i may be erring on the side of caution. Also I think an edged or thicker top would be more...

Help a newbie: Walls if you would like plasterboard interior

I could well be incorrect but I think the OSB also provides the rigidity to the building (it certainly did on mine). so I'd go ... plasterboard battens -OSB (which also acts as the Vapour Barrier) -50x100 studs (filled with mineral wool) -breather membrane -battens (to allow air gap)...

    Newbie Desk Design

A 1.2m span of ply, mfc or mdf will invariably sag over time so if it were me I'd fix a front edge (2x1?) to your top sections, glued and pocketed if you do not want screw heads on the top surface. Stagger the front edge if you like to interlock the tops. Assuming you are going from wall to...

If you feel strongly enough about it start a different thread and try and be a bit more helpful rather than just stating something is bow locks.

Tiny project from felled tree - questions!

You can dry small pieces of wood in the microwave. https://www.google.co.uk/#q=microwave+drying+wood I used to dry pen blank sizes, 25x25x150mm, in an old microwave. Defrost setting only. Weigh the wood, nuke for 3 or 4 minutes, allow to cool. repeat. when it doesn't get any lighter - its dry...

    multistar Centres?

Found some in the US if thats any good? https://thesandingglove.com/Woodturning ... enters.asp According to a retired Peter Child page, parts were being remade and imported by them back to the UK in 2015, so maybe a call to Turners Retreat may find some dusty ones in the back of the shop...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

No skills required! Luckily :) Pair of katangas come shelves for utility room. Builders merchants (i.e. knotty and twisted) PAR 7x1 and 4x1, 69p hooks from amazon and a tin of chalk paint. Simple: cut to length, edge with chamfer bit in router, screw together, paint. Wall fixings under end hooks.
