My first scroll-saw. Now, what to do with it?

and the first cut... (homer) Don't try this at home folks, cutting one handed whilst holding the phone in the other is not good practice. (homer) 1IQeHbuhiJs

My first scroll-saw. Now, what to do with it?

I managed to glean an old saw from the boss, a Ferm FFZ-400N, hoping to dip my toe into the wonderful world of scrolling. Having never seen one in the flesh let alone used one  I thought I may try and document the journey here in the hope that I and others in a similar position can...

Daft question, for people who wear glasses in the workshop..

Mask needs to be sealed on your face below your specs. Fog off is the anti fogging stuff for visors, you can also try wiping a little washing up liquid on and off the inside of your specs as this is the poor mans (or sensible man) substitute :)

Cutting a small slot in wood.

Going by the sketch a simple hand saw / tenon saw / dovetail saw / gents saw would suffice. Something like a Bahco or Irwin from your local DIY chain for about 8 quid. The only issue I foresee is that only the ''finer'' (read - more expensive) saws give an indication of blade width. Grab some...

    Calculating Bending/Deflection of uprights

Hello and welcome. Which timber etc would probably come into the equation, but as an example we had an old dressing table with a heavy mirror on two upright of only an inch square of some cheap unidentified hardwood, but they were just vertical rods fixed to the back of the unit. Putting all...

Fab. =D> Is there a pattern available for this? I have spied an old Ferm saw gathering dust on a forgotten shelf in work, so may approach the boss and see if i can borrow it for a while, and then would love to have a go at something like this. Having never used a scroll saw before, I'll start...

How to best approach a first box project

Buying wood for your first projects. The timber on sale at the large DIY shops is generally not the best quality*, but you can find some if you are, a) willing to sort through the stuff in the shop or b) not worried about your project being straight. *It is generally sold in small packs or...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

At the risk of embarrassing myself in front of the scrollers, did this on the bandsaw last week with a slightly iffy 10mm blade on a cheap bandsaw with an offcut of engineered oak just to see how it came out. The Missus was so impressed she now insists I get a scroll saw! pattern here ...

    Tractor & Trailer

Whilst it may not be technically accurate , I think it has a great amount of character, which is sometimes harder to find. I'm sure the littl'un and the grown ups will be well chuffed.

    Andy Coates - Workshop Fire

Lets remember that its not the unfortunate Mr. Coates that has set up the crowdfunding page but a well meaning third party trying to help out a friend. If for whatever reason, if indeed any at all, you wish to donate or not, there is no reason to comment on business practices, insurances etc as...

IF using a scart lead, Double check your scart lead. Could still be the sky box but theres a good chance its the lead. RGB is far superior to PAL when it works as it should. PAL sends all the colours down one wire (pin) of the scart lead, RGB down 3 separate ones, one for each colour, so its...
