    at a glance at the picture it looks as though the fused spur and light switch are connected to each other, so either the spur feeds the light switch (likely) or vice versa (unlikely). If the former have you checked the fuse in the spur?

    Attaching a French cleat to kitchen cabinets

    Fit a small full width sheet of ply or similar on the inside rear face of the cabinet touching the top and fix through that into your cleat.

    Why not go the other way? Have the cupboards built conventionally and have a pull/ fold down stair for the study area that stores above the cupboards when not needed. That way also frees up floor space as the stairs are not permanently there.
