Quality Mid Range Hand Planes ?

All Stanley have to do is apply quality control and specify quality materials. Maybe bring production back to American soil. Not really much required in the design department. Lo and behold the humble Stanley No. 4 can transform to a decent 'mid-range' plane... Actually, isn't that what they...

    WHAT ROUTER?

The M12V is soft-start. It's not a really slow soft-start like some though, enough to negate the kick. I have an old TR12. That's got quite a kick.

Jet JSSG-10 Wetstone Sharpener Package Deal

Yes I have one and it's OK etc but something about the way Axminster advertise niggles me sometimes. Apart from the tin of Honerite, this was the standard package you used to get for a LOT less ('bout £180 or so?). Slightly disingenous advertising I think. Oh, and what a pile of turgid...

Don't think Ezelaps are double-sided, and they are certainly not that cheap. Ike

    Do car batteries die overnight?

Yes Rog, they can just go like that. Just needs a cell to go open circuit - usually a break inside. My son had his go while he was driving and conked out. When a lead-acid battery gets below 20% charge, you'll be lucky if it will regain a full charge. At 0.4V, it's very dead - as a parrot. Ike

    An alternative to designing?

Some can visualise better than others who find visual aids such as CAD essential. In my experience, I always start freehand - pencil and notepad, then 2D CAD to pin down dimensions/proportions, then (but not always) 3D modelling as necessary for the final 'sell' and approval. Whoever can...

    Heating regime and the gas

Totally agree this is the most economical way. I do the same. However, I don't have much choice as I don't have central heating. One decent gas fire downstairs, a Baxi wBrazilia on the landing, maximum insulation wherever feasible, and judicious use of doors, keeps most parts of the house...

    router failure in router tables

...for some maybe. I think quality routers are well designed enough to cope perfectly well with any amount of dust. If anything it's the on-off switch that suffers - but that's a fairly moot point when the router is switched via a seperate NVR switch, which is normal in router tables...

    Dakoto Water Stone Horizontal Grinder

Well Fred, your concern is justified. There are several 'clones' of this tool around. I bought the Rexon version. At first it seemed a good buy. I used it to flatten the backs on a new set of chisels. After which the stone had worn unevenly. I subsequently set up the planer blade fixture...

Ashley Iles Mk.2 Bevel Edged Chisel Passaround

Matthew wrote: Thank Matt. I think I was the guinea pig on this issue at the time. Barry experimented on the set I returned, and re-did them with the annealed ferrules. I didn't let him know the outcome after the following winter, but I'm happy to say it was 100% successful and I haven't...

Albeit traditional, a Clifton is very competitively priced at the moment.

Ashley Iles Mk.2 Bevel Edged Chisel Passaround

I'd like to think they also have addressed the tendency of the brass ferrules to split. Incidentally, are the Mk 2's precision ground or still hand-linished like the Mk 1's? I've been happy with the Mk 1's - fine tools they are too. I expect I'm very much in the minority where the large...

    TRV's

Honeywell, Pegler, Danfoss are OK. On the basis you generally get what you pay for - maybe avoid boggo no-name contract stuff.
