    AXMINSTER 2006 SHOW SHOCKER

Andy wrote: Too right Andy. I've seen many times the work of 'professionals' (ie. the manual trades) that leaves a great deal to be desired. After all the term only means that one makes ones living out of a particular activity, not that the results meet high standards. IME, trade...

Creating a fake grain effect on wood?

Hi Calv, If the buttons are made from birch plywood, they may well not show a distinct grain. It depends on the way the wood veneer is sliced from the logs to make the plywood. Often the veneer is continously 'peeled' off a rotating log (called rotary cut veneer) and typically this type of...

    Morticer Machine Chisel help

Hi Rog, Some'll say get Clico's, I have the Jap ones and they're very good for the money. Clicos are twice the price but I personally can't see that they could be twice as good. The Chiawaneese ones are fit - but only for the scrap bin. cheers, Ike (First ever broadband post 8) Wow! it's...

    Japanese chisel newbie question

John, Any particular reason for choosing Kirschens?. Just wondered as it's been mentioned they have a relatively chunky side profile. Have you considered Ashley Isles?. The sides are nice and slim - perhaps a little better for doing the dovetails? Just a thought. I'd class Kirchsens, AI etc...

Delta 40570, C or Parallel arm?

Definitely a safe bet to buy one methinks. That's a very competitive price, probably cos it's an outgoing model I think. I paid £199 a year ago from D&M for mine. I think it was. Sounds a lot for a scrollsaw but the quality is much nearer to Hegner than anything else, and still considerably...

Delta 40570, C or Parallel arm?

Hi Whippet, I have that the 40-570 model. It's very smooth in operation and is well made and finished. The quick-change blade tensioner system is excellent. Despite its heavy mass, it still needs to be solidly fastened to a sturdy base to remove excessive vibration at the highest speed...

    Salvage Wood, Pallets, etc

DW wites: Laughing!. Yeah, but by the time you have dismantled about 50, you have the knack. I fenced 50m of the back garden last year with pails made from pallets. All I had to buy were a few extra rails and replacement posts - A tedious but satisfyingly cheap job - ah well, it helps to...

    LV LA Jack Plane Setup

I would suspect the set screws simply need adjusting either side of the blade. One may be fully screwed in and one out which can perhaps (I'm guessing) skew the blade beyond the range of the angle adjuster. cheers Ike

    finally my personal gloat

Gabrielle, do they get their good looks from their mother? :) I built my own house too - almost single-handed. I can understand just how satisfying it is to finally move in. It's not just a house is it? - it's special because it is a part of you (and I expect your partner too)...

    Condensation or Dew

That's a bugger after all that work and expense. There's little you can do to prevent it unfortunately. Extra ventilation will help but not all the time. To minimise the occurrence of condensation for transparent roofing, the best material is double walled polycarbonate sheeting - shame it's so...

No water in the workshop - how d'you cope?
