    Workshop Flooring - Laminate????

I can vouch for sawdust on laminate. Unless you keep the floor clean - it's VERY slippery indeed. It wouldn't be my first choice in the workshop - but then you haven't seen the state of my workshop! My excuse is the accumulated dust, chippings and wood grot helps keep the humidity stable, Ha...

    Just had to share this

To reduce heat conduction, try a wet rag around the preceding joint, held in close contact if necessary with a clothes peg (I don't know how small your workpiece is however). cheers Ike

    Fixing to breezeblock

For heavier duty fixings like shelves etc, I'd recommend trying frame fixings ('Fischer' screws). They're longer and meatier than ordinary plugs. Ike

    Diesel Engines

Intermittent - in that case I'll lay a bet it's either a faulty sensor or a dodgy connection to a sensor. You could be looking for a needle in a haystack with the complexity of the modern diesel particularly if it's a common rail system. A garage can quickly interrogate the ECU fault log to...

Which workshop lighting to buy ?

I've got a mixture of standard and daylight tubes in my workshop at the moment. Daylight tubes are MUCH better. I find I can see the work with more clarity and pick out surface detail better. I will definitely replace all with daylight tubes eventually. Incidentally, I have 4 x 58W 5ft tubes...

Veritas No4 or Low Angle smoother plane?

I'm guessing that you're torn between 'want' and 'need'. Need - follow Bugbear's advise and find an OLDER Stanley/Record and tune it with a new blade etc. Want - I bet before you finish your course, you'll 'want' another (Veritas) plane even more so, so is the nub of it the question "should I...

Veritas No4 or Low Angle smoother plane?

If you stick to the requirement for a #4, then if twere I, I'd plump for the LA with an extra high angle blade rather than the more convential smoother. It's more versatile, is easier to adjust the mouth, and is still excellent for use on the shooting board. Weight and comfort in the hand? No...

    Axminster Biscuit Jointer

I must admit to buying bags from the local builders merchant without really noticing what 'brand'. I wouldn't buy 'expensive' ones as I honestly think biscuits are all much of a muchness - they're all made of the same stuff and swell into the joint OK. I bet many different 'makes' come from one...

    Travel Insurance

Hi Tim, I've used 'TMSM Travel Insurance from Club Direct' online for a number of years (usually single trip - up to 30 days worldwide). I have never had to make a claim (fortunately), so I can't vouch for their side of the bargain. They do however offer very similar cover for a lot less than...

    Axminster Biscuit Jointer

Oh, certainly it does, in that the offset is repeatable and the biscuits are snug (which suggests to me that runout is not a problem - at least with my unit). I have no experience of using a Lamello, Porter Cable or any other premium brand jointer (the 'F' word  ), so in one sense I...

    Axminster Biscuit Jointer

I find it a tad fiddly adjusting the backset of the fence too. I get on fine with mine after chucking the useless bag away (the dust bag that is). It does a perfectly acceptable job for the "enthusiastic amateur" (that I suppose most of us here can class ourselves) and I felt it was a good buy...

    Screws and Oak

Screwfix screws eh. I've found their 'Gold' screws (zinc+yellow passivate) are much prone to breakage - more so than other brand same-size pozi-screws I have used in the past. My theory is it's a combination of an agressive thread profile with a small root diameter, and the material...
