    Lie Nielsen tools

I sold a #9 about a month ago for more than double what it cost me! I was shocked at the going price for some of the LN tools. For my tastes, I prefer the LV miter shooting plane hands down over the #9. I got my LV for a song during the "LV scratch and dent" sale. For the life of me, I...

    Luban Chinese Block Plane

Years ago, I obtained a Sargent autoset smoother. Just a lovely antique! I was cleaning it and it drop out of my hand cracking the sole nearly in half. I went crying to the "Old Tool List" (US email based forum) and one of the members had just the same size sole, and sold it to me for a song...

    Luban Chinese Block Plane

The marketplace legislates what goods are accepted and what is not. Can’t sweat together borg copper components? Then don’t buy them! Soon Lowes and Home Depot will get the message! Ever try to thread borg black iron pipe? First, it is egg shaped, not round. Second, it has uneven hardness...

"I do think" is your personal opinion, and I respect your opinion. My opinion is, it is up to individuals to decide their own litmus test for purchases.

    Lie Nielsen tools

I just sold an LN 4-1/2 that had a W1 blade. Got it in a trade years ago, and did not care for the plane. The blade sharpened OK. I think LN will be around a long time and will retain the growth rate desired by the owner. I believe he fully understands the hand tool market, and the past...

    Luban Chinese Block Plane

To me, I don't care where an item is made, provided the seller provides country of origin. Then we can buy from wherever we want.

Did you buy any cheap tools that surprised you with being actually good?

Though Jacob and David may think otherwise, this is an informative and enjoyable thread. The simple fact is, remove woodworking forums, blogs, YouTube videos, and most of us would not if what we’ve done for years, is right or wrong. Also, we would not know if the tool we are using is the...

Angle drill, huh? What is it good for?

I’ve had a corded Dewalt for years, don’t use it much, but each time needed, it has paid for itself!

    My new skil plane

PC had a 2-1/2” X 14” belt sander that was great, very easily used with one hand. Don’t know if it is still made or not. Somewhere I have their 4” X 24” beast, bought maybe 25 (or more) years ago. I’ve tried letting it lay out, but nobody wants to swipe it!

The Joiner Made Oil Stone Box and Other Bench Stuff Thread

Run you fingernail on the stone to see how fine it is. If you have any other natural stones to compare it to, try that. The left side seems to show yellowish tints of well oiled Washita stones. In any case, this looks like a well loved and used stone and definitely one to buy, if found...

The Joiner Made Oil Stone Box and Other Bench Stuff Thread

Those of us in my many decades of searching old tools, etc., I’ve come to looking for stones in such boxes, as a demonstration of the owner’s pride in the stone. Also, most of the stones in such carved boxes, were the more desirable natural stones.

Did you buy any cheap tools that surprised you with being actually good?

I just sold a LN 4-1/2 that I got on trade about a half dozen years. Put it on the “for sale” section of another forum, for $180.00. Sold within minutes. Guess I left money on the table? By the, I have both a Stanley and Sargent 4-1/2, and did not need the LN.

Did you buy any cheap tools that surprised you with being actually good?

Tools don’t necessarily have to be low cost, to be junk! Through the years, I’ve bought or have been given more than a few items that were to simplify certain tasks but in use, made said task take longer and less accurate.

    Plane problems

Deepen the counterbore, place handle over the stud, place washer on stud, put sturdy spring on stud, top with another washer and tighten nut onto stud. Problem solved! (or adjust with seasonal changes)

Making holes in dovetail saw blade for handle, high carbon alloy

I have used the smaller “Whitney” punch on multiple blades, probably up to 0.035” thick (thicker dovetail, carcass blades). I do it similarly by position the saw handle, then use an appropriate size center punch, for the hole. I would advise that modern punches may not be hardened the same as...

Chisels - I could quit if I wanted.

Similar discussions on US forums of other “content providers”. Some I like, most I don’t watch. As far as Mr. Sellers goes, I have one of his books, and some DVDs my wife bought me long ago. I admire his woodworking skills, but can’t say the same about his video presentation. Back to David’s...

Chisels - I could quit if I wanted.

David, you could easily make your mark as a boutique chiselsmith! The bolster on yours just speaks to all the care and time spent in making them.

Did you buy any cheap tools that surprised you with being actually good?

The “Boomers” among us (particularly in the US) remember well the stigma of “made in Hong Kong” or even worse, “made in Japan”. My long ago departed dad (2004), bought me a 1-1/2” wide western styled chisel, made in Japan, that I used for decades (bought around 1975). It took an edge and kept...
