anyone have a LN dovetail saw & scanner ?

Do as Chris suggested and take a peek at Alf's article. I did the same thing a few years back to a similar Freud saw (there are more than a few tools that look like there is one mfg. with a variety of private labels, such as Freud, etc.). Anyhow, I patterned my saw handle after an Adria...

    Revelation in stock preparation

Actually I have one for a Lee Valley BU smoother. I've only used a few times and not for stock prep from sawn lumber. Basically I used it where you would get tear out from a normal blade and in instances where you are just about ready to go to a scraper. What I've found is a few passes...

    New Design Bessey K

Local Lowes has the 24" for about $30 this morning. I'm curious as to the "country of origin for the new versions. Bessey has started doing a lot of sourcing to the Pacific Rim. I'm not disparaging tools made in that region, but if I'm going to pay a premium price for a tool, I want to know...

    Latest addition to the stable

Very nice Derek. If you need me to break it in for you in the interim period before you start your project, I'll be glad to help! Also, nice job on the new website! Tony

    Which Chisels? ...again

I'll toss in my reply for what it's worth. I like the AI butt chisels--handles fit my hands very nicely and the edges last respectfully for the US domestic hardwoods I work with. I also have the AI American pattern, and I find those handles a bit too large for my liking. I'll remedy that one...

New blade essential for ultra thin shavings?

About a week or two ago, I went through a similar fettling of a Stanley 5-1/2. The plane wouldn't make a shaving less than .004 to .005 thousandth with the stock blade. When I examined the blade, the side that beds against the frog had ripples in the metal similar to wood that has gone through...

Please can you help? (Plane Enquiry)

This part is still available from Stanley. I will say that Stanley has "revised" their website and the service part catalog. What was once a straight forward effort to locate what you need and order has become a exercise in futility. Anyhow for the cap iron for a Stanley 90 bull nose plane...

    My Clifton No 7

Derek, I believe David Charlesworth advocated a bit of silicone caulking in the groove of the front piece of the Clifton cap iron to hold it together. I have yet to do it to my Clifton 3# (one of my most favored tools) but it will be done one of these days. Tony Z.

    Chisels : Paring

I've got a couple of Sorby's--3/8" and 3/4". Seem to use the 3/4" quite often and the 3/8" not so much. The Sorby's I have take and hold a decent edge, at least for the material I work--cherry, white oak and the likes. T.Z.

    Tuesday

Me bad! I was going by the day and time the forum posted by messages! I posted before thinking, but regardless, Merry Christmas anyhow! I'm going to have to take back the Guinness toast I raised a bit ago, or maybe better yet, I will toast again!

    Replacement Block Plane Blade

I also got a Ray Iles high carbon blade in a #18 as well as a Hock high carbon balde in a 60-1/2. I haven't used the Isles blade enough to pass judgement, but I can't say enough good things about the Hock. The Hock takes and holds an edge like no other!

Norm got one so I got one :)

Will those work on this side of the pond? If not when will an appropriate model be released? Will LN or LV carry it?

Thick verses thin – blades for the #112

Derek: beautiful job on the burnisher handle! Rob Lee: practically any carbide will do, however, I believe the results Derek is achieving is more a function of the fine polishing on the rods I sent out with diameter being bit of a lesser influence. After reading Derek's post, I had to go to my...

    Blade replacements

I purchased a Ray Iles blade for my Stanley #18 last month. The blade is "high carbon steel" and is a bit thicker than the stock Stanley. If I remember correctly, the thickness is about .100". Came with a bit of a hollow on the face, which made flattening not bad at all. The high carbon...

No 4 refurb...not quite done yet

Is the frog of this Record plane typical of all Record bench planes? Looks like a Bailey Type 11, 10 etc. which is sort of a "poorman's Bedrock". Thanks, Tony Z.

Replacement LN Iron/Chipbreaker does not fit!

I had the same issue with a LN chip breaker on a Bailey #4. My solution was similar to Denis Chenard. What I did was mill the slot larger to so that the yoke would work correctly, and then braze in metal to make the slot the correct size, in the correct location. I posted this solution on...

    Plane advice please

Well, let me count what I've got: LN #4 with HA frog, several vintage Stanley #4's & 3's, LV Bu smoother, Stanley #4-1/2 & Clifton #3. What can I say? I like tools! As far as what I use and what I like: hands down the Clifton #3 is my favorite, followed by one of the vintage Stanley #4's...

    Axminster lookalike Tite-mark

Yesterday I received a Titemark original size gauge, directly from Glen-Drake, along with a 1/4" mortise blade. Quite impressed with how easy is works and how well it is made. The mortise attachment is a "double bladed" attachment that slides over the shaft and is secured by a set screw. The...

    Grinding wheel

I'm new to this forum (first post), though I've "lurked" for the past year or two. Regarding the question about grinding wheels, I've had experience with both the pink (ruby) and white. The pink was a 100 grit and the white was a 60 grit. I've used both wheels on two different high speed...
