New Graphite Clifton 5 1/2 Passaround

Suppose here over in the states, it's time to start scouring the dealers that sold the green Cliftons for close-out buys! I'm passed my disappointment in the green giving way to gray (not really a big deal!), but I love the O1 blade in my #3 and never have had an issue with the domestic wood...

    what are CLIFTON doing.....

All in all, I wish Thomas Flinn & Company all the best and hope Clifton works out well for them. As mentioned much earlier in this threaed, my Clifton #3 is one of my favorite planes and I'll forgive Flinn for the color change! As far as Flinn the sawmaker, I believe their saws are some of the...

DMT EXTRA EXTRA Read all about it!

I too had a similar experience. I bought an extra to flatten a few washita's that I accumulated. Barely lasted through one. Have heard of others using same set-up with great results. Maybe there was a run of bad ones?

Card scrapers steel and what's best for you?

Charlie, I got the Bahco's from Highland maybe a year or two ago, and they're nothing special. I tried the LN sometime ago and my opinion about matters little, since I said I tried and mean I didn't find it to my liking to use again. My go to scraper is my first scraper, and today has no name...

    what are CLIFTON doing.....

May I suggest following the new Lee Valley "cafeteria plan", whereas you give the user the choice of colors, two piece-cap, handles & totes, "hand forged" imprint mark, etc. For me, I would leave my 12 year old Clifton #3 as is, very handsome plane. As I previously posted, I have also...

    what are CLIFTON doing.....

My #3 Clifton is my favorite smoother. As I am also "jigless", I also like the two piece "Stay Set" cap iron, as I can pop out the iron, take a few licks on my hard arkansas, and maybe a strop or two, and be back at it. I've said here and on the several American forums I visit, that the...

    Old back saw restoration advice

Thanks! I was not aware of the difference. Maybe there could be a market in exporting our American "caulking" tools to the UK. In any case, I would retract my suggestion to use that sort of tool as a source of steel for a replacement saw plate.

    Old back saw restoration advice

You have me puzzled as to how drywall is finished over there Pete!!!!! If need be, I'll send one over.

    Old back saw restoration advice

Use the blade from an appropriately sized drywall taping knife. Fairly cheap to experiment with making a new plate, though you may have to tighten the folded back a bit.

New Mistery Veritas Stuff: Custom Bevel Down Planes

I think Mike (Woodbrains) may hit the nail on the head. Also, having the ability to change parts of the plane after using it a bit, may be attractive to some. I read the instructions posted on the LV site, and I'm confused as to the use of the chipbreaker (used sometimes and not at other...

    Clifton planes

Regarding performance of various steels, I subscribe to the notion of what works for me and that would be O1 or W1. I believe I may have a blade or two that is A2 (don't like it on my oilstones), but for at least the last half decade, I would not purchase A2. I do have a couple of blades made...

    Clifton planes

Over here in the States, I wish that companies such as Clifton and Thomas Flinn had a larger presence. The Cliftons are every bit the plane the LN are and the top grade Flinn handsaws are as good as any boutique maker's at a fraction of the price (I have a 14" sash saw, with walnut handle that...

    Clifton planes

My Clifton #3 remains my favorite smoother - bought new for a bargain price a decade or more ago when one of the tool retailers was dropping Clifton. If I remember correctly at that time, there were a few planes released with some QC issues, but for the life of me, I can't remember any issue...

    Another sharpening stone ID

    I'll trade Washita's for infills!

    Another sharpening stone ID

Lily White was considered top of the grade, and followed by No. 1 and No. 2. I've made a habit of buying oil stones at various sale,/auctions through the years, and have quite a few washita's. I do have a smaller (2" X 6") that is basically unused, and the color is much lighter & mottled...

    Hand scrapers - preferred file?

Chappie's posting of Hayward's tip of placing the scraper between the top & bottom of an oilstone wooden case shows the simple brilliance of many of our woodworking ancestors. One of those, slap yourself on the forehead moments! Thanks for your post!

Lee Valley steel honing plate, did not like it

I started as an oilstone user (two sided carborundum, fine and coarse) 35+ years ago as a carpenter's apprentice, and strayed from oilstones into waterstone territory about a dozen years ago. After a couple of years there (and toying with Scary Sharp), I'm firmly back in oilstone territory...
