    Paul Sellers - Trademark?

So what about the knife wall and about accents, I can pick a Pittsburgh, PA accent out a mile away.

    Slotted Vs. Folded Backs

I have a liking for folded backs also, for similar reasons to Charlie's. BUT...I have a saw, with a folded back, that has been relegated to a wall hanger, with me unable to straighten the plate, as the folded back is more of a folded "sway-back"! I've done everything with the saw, even as far...

    Paul Sellers - Trademark?

I've seen & read about both techniques many years before I ever knew Paul Sellers existed! I'm not posting this to be derogatory about Paul (I've purchased his DVD series & book), but there is so much about our profession & hobby that has been in the public domain for many decades, if not...

naturals stone won't sharpen stanley and qs blade only hss?

Are other makers besides Lee Valley making "powder steel" blades & chisels? On another note, last evening, I had to do a full restoration of a badly nicked 2" very much vintage (old) Buck chisel. Had to start with a coarse carborundum stone, then worked through medium, fine & ultrafine...

    No. 1 Odd Jobs

Glad you located one, not so glad some "chum" decided to lift a tool given to you by your grandfather. #1's are not uncommon here in the States as a vintage tool, but finding a complete one is. I have one without the rule and one complete. If I remember correctly, Woodpecker (a maker of "one...

    New Closed Handle Design.

I really like your version of the closed handle Stewie! To me, everything about it, is perfectly proportioned! Great job!

    Hardening a new plane blade

I remember readiing to use a small dab of silicone caulk to keep the two pieces together. May have been a David Charlesworth tip. I don't use anything on my "Stay-Sets", as I free hand sharpen and hone, and the piece cap makes it very simple.

    sharpening stones

Dave, I'm only about 90 miles north of you (and the real honey-holes are located several hours east of us in the area where you were born!). I've never tried Dan's washita stones and don't knowingly own anything that may have been mined by the company. What is currently sold in the states as...

    sharpening stones

I've found a few like Bugbear has described, a few I've gotten out by spraying a lubricant such as WD-40 to dissolve some of the swarf. A few have bottoms as BB described. I have a few that are simply too tight to dislodge and I leave them alone-chance of damaging the stone or the box.

    sharpening stones

Ah, but my key to a "probably" good stone at flea markets (or boot sales over there!), is to search out those stones that the owners thought enough of and had taken the time to make nice enclosures. When looking, I try to remove the stone to get "look-see" at the condition of the stone hidden...

Narex going back. Now what for mortisers?

You beat me to the punch! I was going to mention the Iles material being D2. I only have one (1/4") and fortunately it came in pretty good shape. At the time I bought it, I was using either Sc paper on a granite plate or waterstones, and I suspect I used the "scary sharp" method on this...

    Oil and water Stones identifying

I got a coule of waterstones, but since I started on oilstones, I couldn't quite figure them out. Too much fussing! I'm also not a member of the "flat world society", especially since I sharpen without jigs, and pretty much use the whole stone surface. Also, without jigs, one can use smaller...

    Oil and water Stones identifying

Dave, Also thought the white <may> have been a white arkansas. I wouldn't tule that out, except that the picture posted has character istics of several old white(r) washitas I have. Plus I have a few vintage white arkansas's and their surface coloration is more even. If I were the OP, I...

    Oil and water Stones identifying

My uneducated guess is the two on the left are washita stones (natural). If DW (Dave Weaver) is around I'm sure he'll give you an opinion also. If washita, the (somewhat) equivalent would be the medium india (man made) you have.

    Record Power Chisels

There is a resemblance in the steel & printing. If you look at Highland Hardware, that sells "premium" Narex, there is also a resemblance in the handles/ferrules.

    Absolute bargain

One has to wonder why the price of a #1 is so high, when there are other tools (not only Stanley) that are rarer.

    Handsaw problem...

I sure would like to "take his saw problem off his hands"! Wow!

Clico - End of an Era

Just feel ancient for the first half hour after getting out of bed in the morning! What has been interesting to me, is the contractor I mostly worked for, I've contracted numerous times for additions to my plant. Still a union shop, with the carpenters still having to serve an apprenticeship...

Clico - End of an Era

I graduated from college in 1974, and was laying around home, not interested in working. My father was a field superintendent for a regional contractor and said you either move out, or get a job. I didn't move out, so he got me into the 4 year carpenter's apprentice program, served all 4...
