    Boat building

Keith - thanks for input. I don't intend to get rich either, it's a one off that I'm taking on for the challenge really. I'll look into Paul Gartside. Hiemlaga - I've been watching some Scandinavian videos about boat building on Youtube. They were really old videos and traditional methods. I...

    Boat building

Hanser - Is there a ratio boat length to mast size? Or is there a specific sail size for a specific type of boat? I'm trying to figure out how we determine the mast/sail size? Beau - I was thinking about making the a wooden keel. Is this foolish? Is it common practice to buy a ready made keel...

    Boat building

Hanser - I am going to document the build and do WIP for the forum, but I think we will spend the winter researching, sourcing materials and tools and general prep work before actually starting the build in Spring. So it will be a while yet.

    Boat building

Thanks for your input guys. Custard I take your warning on board, but I have a couple of advantages in that I have a large barn at the side of my workshop that would be dedicated to solely to this project, so it won't get in my way, and the friend who suggested this is also funding it and...

    Boat building

Hi All, A friend approached yesterday about building a small sailing boat. Something like a Cornish clinker. I'm not a sailor and have no experience whatsoever, but I do like the idea. So, any advice on where to start? I have of course already taken to the internet, but would appreciate any...

John I totally agree, but the person who wants it, wants Ebony.

    Ebony pen blanks

Hi Terry, I've already used it, made a slimline pen. I agree not easy to turn but as you say a bit of extra sanding and the results are good. But I have been asked for a rollerball in Ebony and therefore need a bit thicker blank.

    Ebony pen blanks

I would prefer 1" as the 3/4" is a bit tight with a 12mm barrel it only leaves me about 3mm of wood.

    Ebony pen blanks

Hi All, Could someone tell me where I can buy some 1" x 1" Ebony pen blanks please? I have already tried eBay and Turners retreat. Cheers, Froggy.

    Daimond stones shelf life?

Firstly, yes I'm sure they're clean. I clean them after ever use and before the next one to clean off any saw dust. I use them almost exclusively for planer blade sharpening. Judging by some of the replies above I think I may have bought some duff stones or more likely, copies. It would appear...

    Daimond stones shelf life?

They all feel exactly the same to touch and none of them scratch the blades enough to see.

    Daimond stones shelf life?

I bought 3 diamond stones (Eze-Lap) a couple of years ago at a cost of around £150 believing they would last me a lifetime (I read or heard this somewhere) and now I can't tell the difference, to touch, between the coarse and the fine stones! My blades are not getting a burr and consequently are...

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm always keen to get my hands on new types of wood and this sounds interesting so I may have to bid high. Bob you have too much time on your hands!
