    Tenoning on a spindle moulder

I know there are a few threads on this, but just thought I'd ask again for this specific job. This is the profile I want to cut for a sash rail: I can cut the 10mm x 39mm slot with my wobble...

    Sash window tooling 'systems'

Hi Oille, Thanks for getting back to me! This is place is not listed so I can use more or less anything, but I am thinking of 4/8/4 with Krypton. Not sure about warm edge and low sight line edges... I don't have any Georgian glazing to do. Just large single panes in each sash. The frames are...

    Glazing tapes for Accoya frames

Is there a 'optimal' glazing tape to use with Accoya? I see there are pvc foam tapes, EPDM and Butyl. Do these all work OK? Does using Accoya with it's nasty habbit of acidic atttack, make using the right tape important? I see some people put a sealant cap on the tape too. Is that required...

Sash seals - on the sash rails not the frame

Any advise on putting draft seals on sash windows? I don't like brush seals, so I'm looking at Q-lon. There are many types to choose from, so not 100% sure which are the best to use. Looking at various drawings online, flipper type seals seem common. I'd like to have them on the sash rails...

    Sash window tooling 'systems'

Thanks Ollie. Those 'systems' are eyewateringly expensive! I have been watching Bradshaw Joinery making sashes and although he has a 2 head tennoner, I can see the process of how to do it all with the basic tooling. Yes, the scribed bevel going through the meeting rails is a tricky one. I'll...

    Felder BF-6 planer table setup

All done now, with some help from the Felder group. Took a few days to get it all set dead level and square. Planer cuts lovely now. Thanks for everyones help.

    Sash window tooling 'systems'

Thanks, I'll have a look at Whitehall's site. They have a double glazed sash 'system' but it's POA...

    Sash window tooling 'systems'

I have a big Felder spindle moulder and I'm looking to make sash windows. Any recommendations for moulder tooling? Are the complete window 'systems' worth the money?

    Felder BF-6 planer table setup

Thanks everyone. I will take a closer look at the hinge mounting hardware. I think I need to get the hinge side set then adjust the lock down side to match it. The tables are square to the cutter block, the far ends of the tables appear to be lifted slightly. I'm on the Felder group so will...

    Felder BF-6 planer table setup

I'm getting my BF-6 that I bought a while ago ready to use. I've just been checking the planer tables and found that they are both tipping slightly inwards towards the cutter block. From what I've read/seen the tables need to be dead level with each other (before setting the correct...

Making sash windows - rail and stile dimensions

Thanks for the input Trevanion. So many ways a means to glaze a window! Theres the whole wet/dry thing too.... I guess the important thing is to make sure that whatever you use is compatible with the DGU seals. I have no idea if butyl tape is better than epdm seal or if silicone mastic is...

Making sash windows - rail and stile dimensions

Hi Bradshaw Joinery, Difficult to say if I am repairing. As the cills and outer linings are rotten, I had intended to replace. I don't want any scarf joints. So only the head and inner lining will be salvageable. All the sashes will be replaced. I'd like to use thin units but I keep reading...

Making sash windows - rail and stile dimensions

I'm working out the profile of sash stiles and rails when using double glazing and wanted to do a quick sanity check. Looking at U-value requirements (unless the planning dept say otherwise), I will need a 22mm thick unit. Centre of plane U value 1.2 which is a 4-14-4 with argon and softcoat...

    Sash windows

This is where we are. Sometimes when its windy outside, you can feel the breeze inside!

    Sash windows

Ha! Yes indeed. We have some sashes that are probably 120 years old and they are fine. Some that were maybe 30 years old which were rotten and some that are less than 10 years old and are rotting...

    Sash windows

I have a shed full of reclaimed wood, in fact the shed is made from reclaimed wood too! On the issue of refurbishment, is there a way to do a scarf joint tht wont fail in years to come? To me it seems better to replace a cill or box lining than trying to fit a different bit of wood into it.

    Sash windows

Hi Mike, Yes I have all the files from Mumford's site and I am also waiting for a quote from them! You are right, they do show a DGU in the frames. They also show a bit of an odd meeting rail arrangement where there the profile of the meeting rails is square. There's no wedge shaped side to...

    Sash windows

That certainly is an option. The cills are shot. The sash boxes have all been repaired in the past, so there are scarf joints at the bottom 6 inches. These are all shot. The sashes are mostly ok. Two have rot thats gone through the bottom rails and one stile. I want to fit double glazing so...
