How do professinol cabinet makers cut mitres?

Why not just use a strip of MDF for the test, as Jason suggested? Better than buggering up good wood!

Article on huge rustic type farmhouse table

That sounds like the one Peter Bishop made. Can't remember which issue it was, though.

    Birthday box

Nice box, Mattty. I like the use of the natural edge.

New oak table top onto steel frame

That sounds alright to me. Assuming the wood is seasoned and the piece is going indoors then, I reckon 6mm in each direction has got to be plenty of leeway for movement.

    Aquarium support / storage

Miles, have a look at the Atkinson Walker saw blades as sold by Workshop Heaven. I'm currently playing with one of their Industrial blades in my mitre saw (it's awesome! 8)) but Matthew says their ProTrade range is comparable to the quality of Freud's. Yet, they're generally much cheaper and...

    Floor Standing Thicknessers?

600mm wide?!? You'd be unlikely to find a thicknesser with that kind of capacity for as much as the ones you mentioned originally! :) You might be better off going for a drum or wide belt sander. They give good results without tearout. Trouble is, you have to remove a very small...

    Assembling jet 60A planer

You can buy a 14m length of 230v 16amp extension lead from Toolstation. The image shows the yellow, 110v lead (only 10m long) but, that's probably about as cheap as you're going to get. Unless, perhaps, you can find shorter lengths available elsewhere? It's simple enough to cut it down to length...

    Floor Standing Thicknessers?

Unfortunately, it's similar to the situation we have with stand-alone surface planers more than 6in wide - if you're looking for a brand new machine, you won't find anything cheaper than those two you've already mentioned. :( I'm not a fan of the small, portable/bench-top thicknessers because...

    Yet another Rutlands rant

You may already know this but, I noticed the other day that you can e-mail their MD directly - see here. Just in case you ever felt your thoughts weren't getting past the sales team... :) (Just for the record, I have never had a problem with Rutlands.)

How do professinol cabinet makers cut mitres?

Then, if that goes well, you could try making a tea or serving tray with compound mitres (angled sides)!!

Lost in the world of mitre saw's

No, not the boards - I'm thinking of the posts!! :D Otherwise, I agree - most boards I've seen are a maximum of 32mm thick. EDIT - If you're only building decks at ground level though, I can't think of a situation where you'd large 4in posts anyway... It's when you're building suspended...

    Cheerio

Tom, I'm pretty sure it was on his old blog (Philsville) though, right now, I can't find it...?

    Sycamore tv cabinet

Actually, I quite like Rob's idea of veneering the top - assuming one had access to a large enough bandsaw and could afford all the extra time required for veneering (not easy when you're trying to make money from it and keep the piece within the client's budget!). :)

Lost in the world of mitre saw's

If you're going to be doing a bit of decking then you'll want a say that can cut 90-95mm thick, won't you? That would mean purchasing a saw with a 12in/300mm blade. Some of the 10in models will just about cut 90mm. There are also plenty of non-sliding saws available that will do this - though...

    Sycamore tv cabinet

It's tricky... I do like an odd number of boards but, I also like to keep them fairly wide (as Mattty has done)! Book-matching might work on the sides of a piece but, depending on what it is, it might not be too much for the top... Inlaying would attempt to hide a join but could look...

    Ash / walnut coffee table

Love the shape of the top and the lower shelf. Legs looks very interesting too. Guess you wouldn't have done it as quickly without that Domino! :D

    Tom's Tool Chest - Finished!

That looks fantastic! =D> Plenty of tools but still plenty of space to fill! :D  That finish looks good too. Is it from the General Finishes range?

    Sycamore tv cabinet

Wow, that's some beautiful sycamore! I've generally found that the locally-grown stuff has far more "character" and figuring than European sycamore. If it was me, I would have liked to have done something slightly different with the top (just a personal thing; I don't like centre lines...
