    Another Bookcase Puzzler...

Assuming your making the frame as well then, of course, you'll be able to dry-fit everything in the workshop (!!) before delivering. I guess you could still make several 'segments'. Though, I'm not sure whether it would be better or much easier to use dominoes or another method? If you glued...

    Yet another Rutlands rant

An excellent purchase, Sir! 8) Rutlands claim that the item is 'on sale' but, it's been at that price for the last eight months... It is worth every penny though, when you look at what you could otherwise spend on a decent set of bench stones, a honing guide, grinder or even just a...

    Fitted Wardrobe

Nicely done, James - you're getting good at this, now! How did you apply the stain? It looks to be quite even and very tidy, for pine. You say you had to stain this one to match another piece - erm, where is it??? All I see are the white walls! :D

    The Thing in the Garage

I have the Wolfcraft jig and, unfortunately, is does suffer from the same problem, if you're not careful. I think it helps to pay attention to the start of a cut, whenever doing something like this - the bit isn't cutting dead square to the face unless you can see it 'creating a circle'... Hope...

    Pine Kitchen 2nd Half

Looks good to me. :) What are you going to finish it with?

This is For Mailee and His skills

Thanks, guys. That makes sense. :) What size cutter have you designed your jigs for? 3/8" diameter? I can't imagine you'd want anything smaller, or else it'd take an age to cut each groove with the shallower passes required... Steve, I did build one of yours a while ago but, there was...

This is For Mailee and His skills

Maillee - how do you clamp the jig in place? I've made jigs similar to this in the past but, wherever I put a clamp, it ends getting in the way of the router! :x Just wondering what you do to avoid this?

    The Sandpaper danger

With regards to sanding through veneer, you can do the same thing with a scraper... Plus, they'll burn your thumbs and create an arris sharp enough to cut you, if you're not careful!

    Recent Student Work

Thank you for sharing these photos, Richard. It's always great to see the current work of other makers - and even better to see that much of the pieces made at your college were commissioned! Impressive stuff. :-)

    Workbench top from solid beech

Okay, that sounds like is was sawn through-and-through then. :) By 'heart wood' I assume you actually mean the 'pith', which is the dead centre of the tree and it'll basically lead to severe cracking and splits if you were to try and use it in a project (sounds like you got lucky, though...

    Sandpaper

If this is for de-nibbing or 'cutting back' in between coats then, I highly recommend this stuff from Axminster. As long as you let the finish dry properly, it won't clog and it will outlast any aluminium oxide and standard silicon carbide (wet & dry) abrasives that I've used. You should also...

    Makita SP6000 Plunge Saw flaw?

I've noticed recently (via. eBay and Google Shopping) that you can get the "standard" TS55 for a little more than £300 (well, certainly less than the £400+). The main difference seems to be that this model is single speed and does not have a braked motor. Some offers included a rail; some don't...

    Workbench top from solid beech

I'd be a little concerned that a lump of beech that wide could be prone to cupping and distortion, with seasonal changes in humidity, etc. At that width, it was almost certainly sawn 'through and through' as well. You could try fixing it to the frame with coach screws and large washers to pull...

    Shetland Chair Project Walk Through

Nice work. While wedged through tenons can look attractive, I don't know, I just think they can look a bit out of place on chair arms, unless the arms are very wide...So, I do think you've benefited from cutting those tenons off and using dowels. Some interesting stuff on your website as well. :)

    Best saw blade, advice please

I would recommend the Atkinson Walker blades, from personal experience (although, I have been using them in my mitre saw, not a table saw :-)). At 3mm or 1/8in, their kerf isn't as fine as some of the other manufacturers. Their Industrial blades can be sharpened several times but, for occasional...

    More Tablesaw Shenanigins

One advantage I can see in using these splitters (if I'm reading the diagrams correctly?) is that the rear one appears to divert the waste away from the back of the blade, more so than a standard riving knife would (thinking about it, you could probably create a wedge-section riving knife for...

    which reasonably-priced dust extractor/vac?

Another vote for the Nilfisk, here. I used to own a Record RSDE2-A. It was great, but also, very noisy. By comparison, the Nilfisk vacuums are much quieter and even 'bearable' without ear defenders. It would keep your neighbours happy and it comes with all the accessories for general housework...

    compass plane

Hi Matthew, Did you replace it with a 'thicker' cap iron? One thing I dislike about these planes is that they're prone to 'chattering'. I don't think it's possible to fit a thicker iron without "damaging" the mouth but I've often wondered what effect a thicker cap iron might have (if any?)...

How can I find someone to produce a chair designed by me?

I'll second that. I briefly met Jason a couple of weeks ago and he didn't sound comparable to half the stories I've heard about Betty Norbury's character!! :D Does Jason allow you to take photographs (I guess that's what the phone calls were for?) or touch things now? I kind of agree with what...
