    Woodstar

Looking for second-hand tools maybe worth considering, here. For example; I recently picked up an Elektra Beckum (now Metabo) PK200 table saw on eBay for only £52 plus the cost of fuel. It's a good little saw and, although it didn't come with any of the extension accessories, this basic saw...

    Which scms? On a budget!!

Don't neglect the second-hand market - you could, for instance, probably pick up a used Makita LS1013 for about £200, maybe even less. I bought one of these saws (second-hand) earlier this year and it's been brilliant. I highly recommend them for accuracy and repeatability in the workshop. No...

D'oh! Good point, Mattty. :)

    Veneered external doors

RogerM - please don't feel that way. I'm sure we'd all enjoy seeing what you've been up to and we're generally not ones to judge. I suspect that this topic has gone off-course due to an incident that's probably happened on another forum, or elsewhere... Back the Paul's original topic - as has...

    How powerful is a paslode?

They're a real godsend, if it's something you can afford. I've only ever used one on a staircase (only to fix the spacers in between each spindle) and there's certainly plenty of power there. If you have lots of cordless 18v kit, another option might be to consider the DeWalt and Makita guns...

    Calling Ian @ Tuffsaws!

Ian's just moved house within the last week, which means he may not have an internet connection for another few days, just in case you don't hear back from him over the weekend (I understand he does have access to mobile internet but, it's hardly as convenient...). :)

Makita guide rails - now with review

Thanks for the review, Karl. I think you may have said enough to sway me! :D Make no mistake though; Makita stuff is built to last. It may not be "Festool" but we're not talking B&Q's own brand here, either. They've been a trade favourite for years and I see no reason why your saw (among any...

How to Forge A Career in Cabinetmaking

Adam - are you saying that around 56 people (excluding yourself) on your course are unemployed??? You may find that part of the reason they stayed unemployed over the summer was so that they could get the government to pay their tuition fees by signing on....

    Machine brands pecking order

While it's obvious where Wadkin and Sedgwick should go, followed by Startrite; the rest is a bit tricky, seeing as how most of those names offer ranges to suit various levels and budgets... For example: Jet stuff is generally well regarded around here. But, at the same time, they do selection...

How to Forge A Career in Cabinetmaking

That sounds like the place I visited briefly, the other week (I bought a small table saw off them via. eBay - the motor was in need of some 'attention'). I think the guy's name was Anthony Clark - didn't get to meet him as he was out the workshop all day but, his son works with him and...

Makita guide rails - now with review

Looking forward to the review, Karl. I've also got my eye on the Makita saw, particularly with the current special offers! What didn't you like about the DeWalt? If I remember rightly, it has two features that the others don't - one for anti-kickback and a profile that allows you to...

Table Saw or Sliding Mitre Saw/chop saw?

Are you also looking to use this saw to assist you in your woodturning - as with the bandsaw? It's a tricky one although, Chems makes some very good points... You really do need a good amount of space all-round the machine, if you intend to introduce a table saw to your workshop. With a...

Well, come on then, Rob - have you cut anything yet??? :D

    Dm show any bargains

I reckon you've done very well with that Bosch saw as it had many positive reviews from the magazines, earlier in the year. One plus was that it's light and compact enough to be carried around on-site with relative ease. Only downside may be the accuracy of the laser but, such features are...

    our new toy

Looks like a fair gloat there, Pete. On a relatively "small" machine like that, I don't expect that lifting the machine carefully by the feed tables would do much harm, provided they are secured correctly. Unless, perhaps, you were to lift it by the very ends of each table... :? By...

    Planner/thicknesser - combined or separate?

You can still find surface planers (mostly old cast iron ones) that'll allow you to do a bit of rebating as well. There don't appear to be many new machines available that'll allow you to do this, unless you're prepared to start spending over £1,000. What is important, though, is that you have...

ProGrip Guide Clamp or other bandsaw fence options?

Cast iron can be drilled quite easily using an ordinary cobalt drill bit. Some may advise you to use HSS but, I find that cobalt drills cut much faster. You may find it also helps to 'punch' a starting point or similar, so that the drill cannot wander away. Also, some kind of lubricant would...

ProGrip Guide Clamp or other bandsaw fence options?

In the new issue of British Woodworking, Nick Gibbs has fitted one of the Axminster fences (as Mike has linked to) to his Record Power BS350 bandsaw as an upgrade to the Pro-Grip system. It's dead easy to fit (drill two holes two mount the rail and you can then adjust the fence either way to...

New Bench WIP - update 4 November - Finished

Looking good, Vinny. Even though, those tenons are very skinny! What is the depth stop like on your SCMS? If it's a bolt or length of threaded rod, you could try putting a couple of nuts on there to lock it off securely. Only problem then is that it makes fine adjustment more awkward...

    Farewell old shop

Best of luck with the move, maillee. That does sound cheap; about half of what most people I know tend to pay. What's going to happen to your old workshop? Look forward to seeing plenty of photos!
