Drilling holes with a Forstner bit

I need to drill some 32mm diameter holes through American Oak, at an angle of 45 degrees. I've achieved this in the past by holding the wood in a clamp, and advancing the drill press downwards very, very slowly, but it's not always successful, because no matter how careful I am, the bit...

    Ageing Oak

And easy to obtain, if I'm reading you correctly! But forgive me if I pass on that suggestion.... :D

    Ageing Oak

Thanks, guys. If I was to use a coloured wax, would it work over Danish Oil, or not? And steel wool with Oak? I thought that was a no-no?

    Ageing Oak

Up to now I've always finished Oak with Danish Oil, then waxed it, and I like the natural look that produces. But recently I saw an Oak item finished to look older. It was blacker, but not dense black. The grain was still very apparent. Any ideas what it had been treated with? If it had...

    Etching on wood

After chasing Amazon for this item, which I was told they'd dispatched a fortnight ago, I'm now told it doesn't exist, and would I like my money back? How on earth can they dispatch something that's paid for, but doesn't exist? This makes Amazon look pretty stupid! And it's left me an...

Thanks Andy, that's just what I needed!

Learning to carve letters in wood

I've learned a huge amount from this thread, and am encouraged to have a go at carving letters in the near future. However I'm not very conversant with Word (2007 in my case) and can't find how to print in Outline, or Mirror Image. Can a kind soul direct me to where I can find them, please?

    Cordless/corded drills

If I pay £14 and it only lasts a few months, I've not lost very much, eh? :D I've tried the "buy expensive and it'll last" route, and been disappointed.

    Table saw blades

I've recently learned of the excellent Ian of Tuffsaws, who supplies bandsaw blades. Is there a similar excellent service for table saw blades?

    Cordless/corded drills

Oh my! I went to B & Q to get a couple! They showed me a long list of stores around Bristol, for about 100 miles. Only one drill available, but it would be mine if I drove to Llanelli! They suggested I went to Argos, which I did, and got one for £13.99. It'll do for a start.

    Cordless/corded drills

I'm growing exasperated at two of my drills, Hitchi 12v. I've two chargers and three batteries. One charger died a year ago, now one of the three batteries is expiring, long before I think it should. And have you seen the price of new batteries? I can't afford to replace the...

    Thicknesser

My table saw has a 16amp plug and lead. When I asked the landlord of the unit to install a 16 amp socket for me, he installed it directly over a double 13amp socket, which I assume feeds it. There's certainly no new supply run in. My saw starts and runs fine on it, and has never thrown a...

    Etching on wood

OK, call me impulsive, (snigger - never been called that!) but I've bought it. I'll report back. If I can't master it I guess I can always sell it again!

    Etching on wood

Thanks for that suggestion, Alf. I'd go for that in a flash, but it looks as though it could be really difficult to use. You'd have to move the router as you followed a pointer on the drawing, which could be very cumbersome, and open to big errors - unless I've misunderstood the picture...

    Etching on wood

Oh my stars! Not cheap, are they? But I love what they can produce! Some lovely examples there, guys, thanks! OK, beginner's question - you can't rout and laser with the same unit, can you? I presume a CNC router could be a bit of a messy process, whereas the laser is pretty mess-free...

    Etching on wood

I might look on e-bay, but I have no idea what the equipment is called, as I've already said.

    Etching on wood

That's it! What sort of equipment is needed to do that, please? Are we talking megabucks, or beer money?

    Etching on wood

Yup, I've seen that, Harry, and I'll give it a try if I have to. But I'm sure what I saw was described as laser etching, which is head and shoulders above what you describe. And I wondered how on earth it was done.
